Venture capitalists spar over Biden plan to raise their taxes

President Joe Biden's pledge to pay for his comprehensive child care and infrastructure packages by raising taxes on the wealthy is creating battle lines among venture capitalists.

Even before a specific bill has been formally introduced, some Silicon Valley venture capitalists and other large investors outside California have mobilized to protest the president's plan to raise the capital gains tax, which investors pay when they sell financial assets. The opposition has started with the industry's largest lobbying group, the National Venture Capital Association, which has publicly opposed raising capital gains .

The pandemic made 2020 taxes more complicated. What to know before you file | PBS NewsHour

We spoke with Rhonda Collins, director of tax content and government relations at the National Association of Tax Professionals , about how stimulus checks, unemployment payments or home office expenses might change how you file taxes this year.

Congress approved three rounds of stimulus checks since March 2020. If you received money from any of them, it is not taxed. But each had their own qualification criteria and were primarily based on an individual’s 2019 taxes. So if your 2020 income was significantly different from the previous year, you may not have received the support you were due.

Using Robinhood Could Cost You Thousands In Taxes, Here's Why

Selling specific lots allows an investor to smooth out returns and potentially offset other gains or losses. The IRS allows investors to offset up to $3,000 of other income with stock losses and then carry over any additional capital losses to offset future income. The Wall Street Journal used an example of a trader with Tesla shares to show how strategically deploying specific-lot identification could make a significant difference in the end of year tax bills.

Assume an investor has three Tesla shares that were bought at $400, $650, and $850 in the middle of last year. If the trader wanted to sell a single share at the current price of roughly $700, the taxable amount could swing from a huge gain to a loss depending on which share was sold. Specifically, the trader may have a $300 capital gain if she sold the share bought at $400 and a $150 capital loss if she sold the $850 share.

Nucor, company Biden cited over federal taxes, gets Kentucky tax break

The company was approved for another $3 million of potential tax breaks last month to build a $164 million tube mill in Gallatin County.

"No federal taxes on more than $40 billion in profits," Biden said. "That's not right. We're going to reform corporate taxes."

The ITEP study did not examine state taxes, but found Nucor had $1.2 billion in pretax profits in the last fiscal year, while receiving $177 million in federal tax rebates — despite a 21% federal corporate tax rate.
