Virginia’s New Overtime Law: Time and a Half & Collective Actions

Virginia employers are at increased risk of class action wage litigation following passage of the Virginia Overtime Wage Act .

"Previously, Virginia had been content to rely on the overtime pay requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)," note Kristina H. Vaquera and Shaun M. Bennett in a recent Jackson Lewis legal alert discussing the new statute, which Governor Ralph Northam signed into law on March 31, 2021. Like the FLSA, the Virginia Overtime Wage Act obligates employers to pay one and one-half times an employee's regular rate of pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek.

Allowing more Ohio workers to earn overtime pay - Urbana Daily Citizen

Four and a half years ago in Columbus, I stood with then-Vice President Biden and the Secretary of Labor, and we announced that the administration was going to finally raise the salary threshold to earn overtime pay, making millions more workers eligible.

The rule would have meant more than 4 million Americans – including more than 130,000 Ohioans – would get a raise. However, those workers never got that raise because politicians around the country sued to stop it.

Murphy named Holyoke's acting mayor

In a special meeting Monday, the City Council voted to name Ward 2 Councilor Terence Murphy acting mayor, a role he will fill until a new mayor is elected in November.

Murphy takes over for City Council President Todd McGee, who has been acting mayor since Alex Morse stepped down March 26 to become town manager in Provincetown.

McGee said he could only serve as acting mayor on a temporary basis because of a potential conflict of interest with his employer, MassMutual.

Factory Farm Gas Erodes Environmental Regulations in NC | Food Integrity CampaignFood Integrity

Factory farm gas is rapidly expanding its footprint across the country, putting rural communities and our environment at risk. Food Integrity Campaign has closely followed the development of factory farm gas projects in North Carolina.

Factory farm gas is also referred to as "renewable natural gas" or "biogas." It is made when industrial-scale dairies, slaughterhouses, and hog farms harness methane from the vast quantities of animal waste produced on site, and corporations such as Smithfield Foods then refine the methane into a finished product chemically identical to natural gas.
