Gabriel Zucman, L&S Economics Professor, Named 2021 Carnegie Fellow | Letters & Science

Zucman's research projects, often in collaboration with fellow UC Berkeley economist Emmanuel Saez, have largely examined and shed light on complex topics of great consequence: income distribution, tax privileges, and global wealth inequality. He has worked with members of the World Inequality Lab to help create Distributional National Accounts, which enable the analysis of our economy by different income and social groups.

"I am humbled to have been selected as a Carnegie Fellow, alongside such incredibly talented scholars," remarked Zucman. "I am extraordinarily grateful to my co-authors, colleagues, students, and all the members of the Berkeley community, without whom my research would not exist and who are a constant source of inspiration. I look forward to building this first prototype of real-time distributional economic accounts — I am excited to take up this challenge!"

Opinion: Bring supply-side economics to health care

Non-pandemic health care hasn't been much on the agenda during President Joe Biden's first 100 days. But reducing health care costs remains a priority for the public — ranking ahead of addressing racism, crime, immigration or climate change.

Democrats' wariness of the issue is understandable. The public is passionate about health care, but also risk averse. Three of the past four presidents (two of them Democrats) wrecked their poll numbers with efforts to enact sweeping changes to the U.S. health insurance system.

Biden: 'Trickle-down economics has never worked' | TheHill

"It's time to grow the economy from the bottom and the middle out," the president said during his first address to a joint session of Congress.

Biden has proposed paying for his $2.25 trillion infrastructure plan through tax increases on corporations, and his new $1.8 trillion plan focuses on helping families through tax hikes on high-income individuals.

During Wednesday's speech, Biden reiterated his pledge to not raise taxes on those making under $400,000 per year. He said that he doesn't want to punish anyone and argued that increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporations was a matter of fairness.

Activists opposed IEC expansion call projects economics flawed

SOUTH BEND, Ind. –Open Space and Agriculture Alliance released a financial report on the proposed Indiana Enterprise Center. The group said they've found some serious problems with the IEC's current development model.

"This project has been a waste of taxpayer money and that the two TIF districts in New Carlisle have been used to divert property tax revenue away from taxing jurisdiction. Such as New Carlisle and all of the township," Kathy Schuth, an OSAA member said.

We could use economics to curb migration from Central America | TheHill

Biden has asked for $20 billion to build ten manufacturing innovation hubs. Separately, the president's infrastructure plan allocates $50 billion to strengthen supply chains for critical goods. Imagine if some of these production hubs were placed in Central America and the Caribbean, another major source of migrants, in places such as El Salvador, Honduras or Guatemala, or the turbulent, high unemployment border region between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

To establish each overseas hub, the United States could assemble $1 billion in infrastructure investment, drawing upon the resources and expertise of the Export-Import Bank and the Development Finance Corporation, as well as private investors and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Greenwich High School Economics Students Excel In Competition | Greenwich, CT Patch

GREENWICH, CT — Members of the Greenwich High School Economics Club excelled in this year's Federal Reserve Challenge, reaching a new milestone in their annual participation in this competition.

This year, the "Fed Challenge" transitioned from a presentation format to a research essay about a chosen theme, according to a news release.

In response to the theme of "Economic Inequality" these GHS students focused on how COVID-19 has exacerbated pre-existing educational inequalities and how this feeds into larger labor market trends in the United States economy. In recognition of their impressive work, their essay, titled, "The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Circular Relationship Between Educational and Economic Inequality," has been selected for publication in the Journal of Future Economists.

David Haenke on 'Bioregionalism & Ecological Economics - Resilience %

The article below was written by David Haenke in 1996 and has not just historical but more importantly conceptual and practical significance to the growing impulse of bioregional regeneration around the world. In a recent interview with David I spontaneously offered to 'host' three of his most important pieces of writing on my Medium blog as a means for him to share them more widely with an interested audience. Enjoy! — Daniel Wahl

Earth reality mandates this: All human systems — towns and cities, transport, technologies, agriculture, manufacture, energy, housing, production, distribution, consumption — must be designed to be ecologically resonant and responsible. The best place to find the necessary design principles and patterns is in close observation of the function of intact natural ecosystems, i.e., nature's economy.

Zomato Posts Positive Unit Economics As It Files For An IPO

Zomato achieved positive unit economics by eking out a contribution margin of INR 22.9 per order on average from April to December 2020

One of the biggest obstacles for food delivery companies in India has been to crack the formula for positive unit economics — which means making more money than spending per delivery

Zomato reigned in spending through fewer discounts, lower payouts to delivery executives and increasing its commission from restaurants
