Michigan cities ask legislators to ensure nonresidents pay taxes

The Michigan Municipal League also requested that the Republican-led Senate and House let public bodies meet virtually beyond Dec. 31 and tackle "unintended interactions" between a tax-limiting state constitutional amendment — known as Headlee — and Proposal 1, a 1994 overhaul of the tax and school-finance systems.

Charitable Contributions and Your Taxes - TheStreet

As with all deductions, timing is everything. You can take the deduction for your contribution in the year that you make it.

There's also a special rule for folks who donate to colleges and universities and receive the right to buy tickets to school athletic events: They can deduct 80% of their donation.

Cash may be king, but if you want a really big tax saver, your best bet may be a donation of appreciated property — securities, real estate, art, jewelry or antiques.

Michigan cities want work-from-home non-residents to pay income tax

LANSING — With further coronavirus relief money still stalled at the federal level, pressure is building for state lawmakers to provide financial help to struggling cites and businesses.

On Monday, city leaders called for state legislative actions they said would help prevent cuts to vital services such as police and fire protection, without requiring a state handout.

Late last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer asked lawmakers to pass a $100-million state relief plan for Michigan families and small businesses, saying the state can no longer wait for federal action.

Small businesses that took PPP aid may now face a punishing tax bill - Chicago Tribune

A recent IRS ruling tying up a loose end in the 2020 economic-relief law could force many small businesses to pay taxes on government aid meant to help through the pandemic.

Failure to file less urgent if expecting tax refund - HoustonChronicle.com

A: Because you do not owe any taxes, you will not be facing any failure-to-file or failure-to-pay-on-time penalties. But to claim a refund, you must file your return within three years of its original due date.

You could wait until next year, and hopefully by then you will be able to go to the free clinics that AARP provides. According to the AARP Tax-Aide website, the service is only provided from January to mid-April. They might have added a few more months this year, if the program was even still offered, given the circumstances.

Franchise Taxes in California and Delaware Similar Only in Name

Recently, I came across a proxy statement filed a California corporation seeking shareholder approval to reincorporate in Delaware. In the midst of a lengthy disquisition on the pros and cons of reincorporation, the issuer noted that the franchise taxes payable in Delaware may be greater than the equivalent or other similar taxes currently payable in California.

The Delaware franchise tax is a fee imposed by the State of Delaware for the right or privilege to be a Delaware entity. It is not based on income or company activity; it is a tax that must be paid to maintain the entity's good standing status. California's franchise tax is quite different. It is basically a tax on California source income. In general, reincorporation will not result in Delaware's franchise tax being substituted for California's franchise tax.
