Another Voice: Wage board needs to lower overtime threshold for farm workers | Opinion |

This Thanksgiving, as you pass the mashed potatoes, dig into that second piece of pumpkin pie or pour yourself a glass of milk, please take a moment to recognize the farmworkers whose labor produced your bounty. Then, take another moment to try to comprehend why the men and women working these low-wage, physically grueling jobs are excluded from a basic labor protection – the right to overtime pay for work in excess of 40 hours per week.

The reason for this lies in the initial creation of wage and overtime laws more than 80 years ago. They were designed to exclude Black people by carving out an exemption for agricultural workers and domestic workers, at that time most of whom were Black.

Washington Supreme Court Grants Overtime Protections to Dairy Workers Under the State

In a 5-4 decision, a divided Washington Supreme Court ruled that dairy workers are entitled to overtime pay under Washington law if they work more than 40 hours a week, nullifying an exemption to the Washington Minimum Wage Act’s overtime requirement as applied to dairy workers.

Before the decision, Washington’s Minimum Wage Act (RCW 49.46.130(2)(g)), like federal law, exempted agricultural workers, including dairy workers, from overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

How to Create a Holiday Pay Policy - businessnewsdaily.com

While some businesses have the luxury of closing on days like Christmas and Labor Day, others don't. When you do have to remain open on holidays, the question becomes whether the employees who don't work should be paid for those days and whether those who have to work on holidays should be given any extra compensation for it.

Holiday pay, despite having a special name, is simply whatever compensation employees receive for working or not working during any holiday. Holiday pay can often serve as a "gift" to employees so that they can take time off during the holidays without losing pay.

Lubbock ISD police officer files lawsuit, claims he was not paid overtime | KLBK | KAMC |

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock ISD police officer Daryl Kissell sued the LISD Wednesday in federal court.

Kissell claimed he was made to work overtime without getting overtime pay. He also claimed he was made to work hours without hourly pay.

"No justification or excuse existed for Defendant's practice of failing to compensate [Kissell] one and one-half times [his] regular rate of pay for each overtime hour worked or to pay [Kissell] at least minimum wage for all hours worked," the lawsuit said.

Letter to the Editor: Where the money is going | Opinion | bakersfield.com

Why has everyone stopped talking about the high-speed rail currently gutting the California state budget? Every smart citizen with common sense knows what to do when facing a person budget shortfall — start cutting back on non-essentials. Cut back on the Starbucks runs, pack a lunch and other cutbacks.

So what does Gov. Gavin Newsom do? He takes money from essential state services like public safety employees. If you look closely at what he does, you will see that their income is cut by 10 percent, and they are provided a personal leave bank allowing them to take additional time off. This off-time is covered with overtime pay which actually costs more to the state than the 10 percent salary savings.

Harvest of their hands: Remember where all the Thanksgiving food comes from - New York Daily News

While what's different about this COVID Thanksgiving is that many Americans are not with family in person, what's the same as every other year is that the people who draw the food from nature for our feasts — and provide our sustenance every day of the year as well — are working today, as they always work.

* * *

After decades of pushing from this column, advocates and a handful of enlightened lawmakers, last year Gov. Cuomo signed the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act and handed us the pen. Field hands now have unemployment insurance, an unpaid day off each week, the right to organize and overtime pay. However overtime only starts after 60 hours per week, while almost everyone else gets time-and-a-half after 40 hours.

Is there a gap between public and private sector pay? - BBC News

.css-14iz86j-BoldText{font-weight:bold;} Chancellor Rishi Sunak was asked on BBC Breakfast why some people in the public sector are having their pay frozen in the coming year.

Public-sector employees are generally those paid by the state. All others work in the private sector.

"What we've seen in the private sector is that wages have fallen over the last six months by about 1%," the chancellor said. "In the public sector, wages have gone up by 4%."
