With Congress deadlocked, California passes its own small-business aid package
With a federal aid bill stalled in Congress, California enacted several measures Wednesday that aim to help the state's restaurants and other small businesses weather the pandemic.
Restaurants could also benefit from a $411.5 million general stimulus bill that includes $230.5 million specifically earmarked to jumpstart construction within the state.
The actions come as Republicans and Democrats squabble in Washington, D.C., over a national relief and stimulus bill. Lawmakers are deeply divided over how much aid should be extended by a new bill, which would be the fourth aid measure enacted by Congress since the pandemic erupted. Democrats favor a measure already passed by the House of Representatives that calls for $3 trillion in aid and stimulus spending.

WASHINGTON — U.S. wholesale prices rose 0.3% in August, just half the July gain, as food and energy prices declined.
The Labor Department said Thursday that the August advance in the producer price index — which measures inflation before it reaches consumers — followed a 0.6% surge in July, which was the biggest monthly gain since October 2018.

Helping to moderate wholesale prices in August was a 0.4% drop in food costs, the third straight decline after a big jump in May caused by supply bottlenecks related to coronavirus cases at meat packing plants. Energy costs edged down 0.1% in August after sizable gains in the previous three months.

Miami: A federal court has held that preparer Jessyca Bernard has violated a 2018 permanent injunction that barred her from preparing returns for others.
Bernard admitted that she violated the injunction by preparing 438 returns for others, using her husband's name to conceal her involvement. Bernard agreed to pay the U.S. $79,000 as reimbursement of its investigative expenses and disgorgement of fees she received from refunds claimed on returns she prepared in violation of the injunction.
