MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBRC) - Gov. Kay Ivey on Thursday officially announced a transfer of $300 million in CARES Act funding to the state's rapidly shrinking unemployment benefits fund, a move designed to spare businesses a major tax hike.
A smaller tax increase on employers is still expected and some state and business leaders are hopeful more CARES Act money will be put toward unemployment in the future.
"Since the $1.9 billion in CARES Act funds were allocated to Alabama, I have worked to get those funds into the hands of those Alabamians who need it," Ivey said in a written statement. "My administration anticipated shifting in the allocation of this money, and we will continue evaluating our options as we move forward."

For the first time since the 1970s, drivers in Michigan can now choose how much medical coverage they want to pay for on their car insurance.
The change happened in July after reforms from a 2019 state law went into effect. Until recently, every driver in Michigan had to pay for an unlimited amount of Personal Injury Protection ( PIP ), on their auto insurance.
PIP is the part of auto insurance that pays for medical coverage and other catastrophic assistance when drivers get in an accident. Prior to the reforms, many drivers were simultaneously paying for medical coverage on their health insurance and car insurance bills. Now drivers can choose how much PIP coverage they want.

Deshaun Watson, like Patrick Mahomes before him, doesn't need to worry about securing a new contract beyond the 2020 NFL season. Both elite AFC quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2017 draft were rewarded with lucrative extensions before the season.
The Texans gave Watson a four-year, $156 million deal in early September. The Chiefs locked up Mahomes for a decade with a record-breaking 10-year, $45 million deal in early July.
Although it seems like Mahomes got a lot more money and security than Watson, both QBs agreed on what was best for them going forward. Mahomes has the more guaranteed money overall from Kansas City, but there also are some ways Watson has an advantage in Houston.
