Union pact would give LAPD officers $245 million in overtime - Los Angeles Times

A tentative deal between Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the leadership of the police union would guarantee $245 million in cash overtime pay for officers, locking in substantial personnel costs just as law enforcement spending is under major scrutiny.

To get the union to postpone two pay raises, Garcetti has offered officers at the Los Angeles Police Department a minimum of $70 million in overtime pay in each of the next three budget years. On top of that, officers would be permitted in the final year of the contract to cash out as much as $35 million in overtime pay for hours they've already worked, but for which they have not been compensated.

Deadline Detroit | Overtime pushes pay above $190,000 for 6 Warren Fire Department members

Mayor Jim Fouts said the high pay came from overtime pay rates incurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fouts said the city has agreed to minimum-staffing requirements in the fire department union contract. The clause requires the city to maintain a certain level of staffing at all times.

He said that Covid-19 also made it difficult to replace retired firefighters because the organizations involved in searching for new firefighters were hit by the pandemic.

MTA overtime kings are looking more and more like mobsters

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck . . . The alleged overtime pay conspiracy by a group of MTA workers looks even more like organized crime than we'd thought .

Pizzonia accumulated $189,297 of overtime pay as an LIRR track worker in 2019 alone. Meanwhile, Balestra Jr. collected $241,000 of OT in 2018, the equivalent of eight hours of extra pay per weekday.

The overtime con spanned multiple years, prosecutors charge, as the fraudsters helped each other collect wages while bowling, vacationing and chilling at home over 40 miles away.

Northern Michigan resort ordered to pay overtime and $7,500 for labor violations

BELLAIRE, Mich. (WJRT) - Shanty Creek Resort in northern Michigan has been ordered to pay over $87,500 in back overtime wages and a $7,500 fine for teenage labor violations.

The U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division says the resort's operator paid employees only for the time they were scheduled rather than the total number of hours they actually worked. Regulators ordered Shanty Creek to pay 256 workers a total of $87,529 in overtime.

"Employers must pay workers every penny they have legally earned," said Wage and Hour Division District Director Mary O'Rourke, in Grand Rapids. "If employees work before or after their scheduled shifts, the employer benefits from that work – so they must pay for it."

This Week at the Ninth: Per Diems and Wages | Morrison & Foerster LLP - Left Coast Appeals -

This week, we take a look at the Court’s decision attempting to navigate the fine line between employer payments that reimburse employees for expenses—and thus need not be considered in calculating the employees’ overtime wage rate—and payments that in fact compensate employees for hours worked.

Clarke v. AMN Services, LLC
The Court holds that “per diem” reimbursement payments were not actually reimbursements, but rather functioned as wages subject to state and federal overtime requirements.
