While Jimmy John's will be paying settlements to company employees, previous rulings spared it from an even larger settlement related to franchised employees. An Illinois federal judge previously rejected claims that Jimmy John's jointly employed franchised employees, and those individual claims were dismissed based on that decision. But these individuals were never formally taken off the lawsuit, according to Law360.
Joint employer liability has been a contentious issue for several years, but the U.S. Department of Labor narrowed its definition under the Fair Labor Standards Act in 2020. Under the new definition, restaurants can only be held accountable for franchisee employment infractions if the franchisor hires and fires these employees, manages staff employment records, among other employment-related oversight.

Jimmy John's Managers Seek Approval of $1.83 Million OT Deal
Jimmy John's LLC and several franchisees agreed to pay $1.83 million to resolve a Fair Labor Standards Act collective of nearly 600 assistant managers nationwide who alleged they were cheated out of overtime pay, according to a motion for settlement approval filed in a federal court in Illinois.
Under the proposed deal, approximately 66 managers, who were employed at Jimmy John's corporate-owned restaurants and opted into the FLSA collective, will each get individual payments from a $272,500 fund.

According to New Fairfield payroll data obtained by the News-Times, the five officers combined earned more than $150,000 in overtime pay.
Officer Kevin Rafferty — who joined New Fairfield’s police department in 2016 after more than 20 years on the Connecticut State Police force — earned around $130,039 in 2020, making him the third highest paid town employee of 2020.

Farmworkers tax credit could double | News, Sports, Jobs - Observer Today
Legislation has been introduced to double the state’s Farm Workforce Retention Credit from $600 to $1,200 next year — with a total price tag to state taxpayers of $50 million a year.
A.3886 was introduced by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, D-Binghamton, with several co-sponsors. The credit would increase from $600 in 2020 to $800 in 2021 before increasing to $1,200 in 2022. The legislation also makes the tax credit permanent. Companion legislation, S.3502, has been sponsored by Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-Kingston.
