As snow piles up, so does overtime pay for snowplow operators | 'You do whatever it takes' |

A Union Grove village snowplow driver clears Vine Street in Union Grove in late December 2020 after the winter season's first major snowfall, kicking off what has become a busy winter for street crews.

RACINE — Snowplow operators in the Racine area have been working overtime this winter, a season that has seen double the amount of snow as the norm . While that's good for drivers who have clearer roads to travel on, it also costs extra.

With repeated winter storms pounding the region with above-average snowfall, some communities are nearing the limits of their budgets for overtime pay.

US DOL orders Konstrak Builders to pay $51K in back overtime | Guam Business | postguam.com

U.S. Department of Labor officials said Konstrak Builders intentionally violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by paying straight time to 23 workers when they should have been receiving 1.5 times their salary for overtime hours worked.

"By deliberately misclassifying employees as independent contractors, a Dededo construction company attempted to avoid paying overtime when workers exceeded 40 hours in a workweek until a federal investigation uncovered the scheme," according to a DOL press release.

Governor Abbott, DSHS issue temporary waivers to cover overtime payments for meat inspectors -

AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott has issued waivers to temporarily allow for the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to cover overtime payments for meat inspectors in Texas. DSHS will pay overtime costs for meat inspectors that are working to restore the meat supply in Texas over the next week.

“These waivers will ensure meat inspectors are compensated for their time without burdening meat-processing and slaughterhouse establishments with extensive overtime costs throughout the next week,” said Governor Abbott. “Meat inspectors are crucial to restoring our meat supply in our state, and I thank them for working around the clock for their fellow Texans.”

Public Officials See Salaries Inflate With COVID Overtime

(TNS) — Erie County, N.Y., Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein collected $183,414 in overtime last year — or 91 percent of her base salary. Her total compensation of $385,726 reflected 1,266 hours of overtime. That makes her one of the highest paid employees in government.

A new report by County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw shows that Burstein was the largest single recipient of taxpayer-funded overtime. It also shows that top Sheriff's Office administrators continued to receive more Covid-19 related overtime than members of any other department in county government.

Blue-Collar Jobs Boom as Covid-19 Boosts Housing, E-Commerce Demand - WSJ

An Orlando, Fla.-area home builder is seeking to add four construction workers to a six-person team in the midst of soaring housing demand during the pandemic. In Atlanta, a forklift driver rakes in overtime pay because the warehouse that employs him is so busy distributing packages. A Chicago-based truck-trailer manufacturer is increasingly hosting drive-through job fairs and raising wages by up to 7% as hiring picks up across its nine production plants.

Nationally, employment in residential construction, package delivery and warehousing now exceeds pre-pandemic levels. Manufacturers have steadily added back jobs after slashing payrolls last spring, though employment remains down about 5% from February 2020, according to Labor Department data. Job openings in many blue-collar occupations broke above pre-virus levels last summer and remain significantly elevated, figures from the online job site Indeed show.

Trump's postmaster general personally ordered USPS overtime cuts: Report

Former President Donald Trump's postmaster general reportedly directly ordered cuts to overtime pay for USPS workers, contradicting his congressional testimony.

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington obtained a memo purportedly showing that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy directed the cuts to overtime that sparked controversy last summer.

"Throughout the summer, USPS faced operational challenges due to postal workers taking the paid leave granted in the COVID Phase 2 bill. These operational challenges and service delays are separate from the recent plan put forth by the Postmaster General (PMG) to reduce overtime," the memo read under a section heading called, "USPS Operational 'Shift' to Reduce Exorbitant Overtime."
