Last week, the Ledger took a look at the 2021 Contemporary Accounting Forum — a forum dedicated to covering issues in today’s business environment pertaining to accounting — and discussed it with Accounting Students Association Advisor, Gary Viers.
"The 2021 Contemporary Accounting Forum was attended by over 140 people," Viers said. "This was a tri-campus event that consisted of students and faculty from UW Tacoma, Seattle, and Bothell. There were also alumni and business professionals in attendance."

Former Vice President of Construction Management Company Sentenced for Corporate Accounting Fraud
RICHMOND, Va. – A former corporate executive of a construction management company was sentenced today to 27 months in prison for his role in a corporate accounting scheme that concealed millions of dollars in debt owed by the company.
"Over a five-year period, Patrick Lindsey served an integral role in a large-scale corporate accounting fraud scheme designed to conceal the fact that MGT Construction was more than $20 million in debt," said Raj Parekh, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
SIU accounting students offering free tax preparation services
CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Free income tax preparation services will soon be available for many people, thanks to a group of =Southern Illinois University Carbondale students.
Beta Alpha Psi , a College of Business and Analytics honors accounting student organization, is sponsoring the popular, free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in 2021 for low- and moderate-income community members.
"Being a participant in VITA allows students to gain beneficial knowledge and hands-on experience as well as offering valuable tax assistance to the community," said Allison Bone, a master of accountancy student from Lincoln, Illinois, who is serving as the 2021 VITA program coordinator.

Shares of Ebix plunge after accounting firm raises questions
Shares of Ebix Inc. took a beating Monday as investors reacted to last week's news that an accounting firm had raised questions about the Johns Creek-based company's financial reporting.
The software company, which is traded on the Nasdaq exchange, lost more than 50% of its value in early trading, before a modest rebound.
Ebix closed at $50.79 a share Friday. Shares plummeted to $25.20 as trading opened Monday. By early afternoon, Ebix had risen to just above $30 a share.

I received a call early in January from a colleague with a common problem. Sam (not his real name) is shorthanded on tax return reviewers and he feels he will not be able to handle the workload this tax season. He asked me for suggestions.
