Gov. Wolf’s Plan to Invest Billions in Education, Cut Taxes for Working Families Draws Praise

Yesterday, Governor Tom Wolf delivered his budget address for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The governor laid out a plan that lowers taxes for working families while making a historic investment in public education.

The plan calls for major investments that will help Pennsylvanians succeed, including fully and fairly funding our schools so that all students receive a high-quality education and reforming our workforce development system to address inequities, support workers and establish the well-trained workforce businesses need. At the same time, the governor's plan will cut taxes for businesses and working class families.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican lawmakers narrowed their proposal to cut Kansas' income taxes before it cleared its first legislative hurdle.

A GOP leader said Wednesday that they'll put off further action at least a short while to consider how the plan might affect the next state budget.

The Republican-controlled Senate tax committee endorsed a bill reducing income taxes by about $170 million during the budget year that begins July 1.

What you need to know before filing your taxes | wzzm13.com

Experts agree that Americans should plan to file taxes between February 12, 2021 and the tax deadline of April 15, 2021.

"What they're doing is updating the programming behind the scenes to cover things like stimulus checks that people need to get this recovery rebate through which wasn't in place last year," explains Phil Mitchell. "So the IRS is suggesting that you don't file early."

So far, many Americans have received 'two stimulus checks': one in the amount of for $1200 in April 2020, and one in the amount of for $600 at the end of 2020 or beginning of 2021. If someone who qualifies for the stimulus check but did not receive one or both of the checks, they should track the money using the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website.

Tax pros predict Biden tax changes | Accounting Today

One thing's for sure: President Joe Biden proposes tax hikes for wealthier taxpayers and for corporations, as well as unspooling other parts of 2017's tax reform. What tax laws will change first, especially as the economy continues to struggle under the pandemic?

* * *

"The top tax rate," said Ann Etter, a CPA and partner at Goodney & Associates, in Northfield, Minnesota. Also "the corporate tax. The small corps got a tax increase out of this. The anti-corporate sentiment is building."

Opinion: What's the best way to reduce the taxes on my estate? - MarketWatch

I understand that all the money taken from the trust would be at least federal tax-free for my children. Thanks for your help!

* * *

However, most people do not need to consider a gift to a trust to avoid estate taxes. Most estates are not subject to federal estate taxes. With some planning, up to $11,700,000 of one's assets ($23,400,000 for a couple) can pass free of federal estate taxes in 2021.

Mitt Romney's Higher Child Tax Credit Comes With a Twist | Kiplinger

Romney's plan would permanently increase the child tax credit to $3,000 per child ($4,200 for a child under age 6) and would allow 17-year-olds to qualify. And he wants the credit to be paid in advance by having the Social Security Administration send monthly payments of $250 per child ($350 per child under age 6) to qualifying families. That would be a nice windfall for many families. Take a family of four with children ages 9 and 3.

Romney's idea may sound like a blessing to parents of children age 17 and younger. Now, here's the rub. He wants to pay for his proposal by eliminating three popular tax breaks. First, he would get rid of the head-of-household filing status so that a single parent with children would have to file a single return with less favorable tax brackets.
