Diversity in accounting field: Black children should be encouraged

I remember growing up in the small town of Victoria, Mississippi, where my grandfather was a teacher, coach, business owner and tax preparer within my community.

My first time hearing about accounting was in high school when a few of my white friends took an accounting course. The first accountant I knew was the teacher who taught the course who was also white. I thought to myself that this course and career was not for me. After all, I had dreamed that when I grow up I would be a doctor. Normally, most children would hear people tell them to be a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher but I never heard to "be an accountant" as a child.

Connecting Expected Stock Returns to Accounting Valuation Multiples: A Primer - HBS Working

We outline a framework in which accounting "valuation anchors" could be connected to expected stock returns. Under two general conditions, expected log returns is a log-linear function of a valuation (market value-to-accounting) multiple and the expected growth in the valuation anchor. We show that the framework can: 1) allow for expected enterprise returns, 2) correct for the use of stale accounting data in estimation, and 3) accommodate differences in information quality.

PwC offers free masters degree for Black, Latinx accountants | Accounting Today

Pursuing higher education is a barrier for many working professionals, but PwC's latest program is helping diverse students earn a free master's degree on the job.

The PwC program is also seeking to close the diversity gap in the accounting industry by choosing 40 Black and Latinx students from across the nation to participate in their free masters program. As an industry, accounting lacks diversity; of the 1.9 million accountants in the U.S., only less than 9% of them are Black, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lack of representation is even more staggering for the coveted CPA role, which are held by less than 1% of Black employees.

Beating the odds: Launching a business during COVID demands determination, opportunity

At the start of 2020, it was all lining up for Kim Davis: She'd spent years growing her clothing boutique, Flower Wild, online; in January, she signed a lease in a new retail development to open her first physical storefront. She was supposed to move in that March.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Supply chains ground to a halt. Construction on the retail space Davis leased was delayed through the summer. By the time the building was completed, it was three months past her original move-in date.

Passing down a business? Here’s how to keep it fair for heirs – Press Enterprise

Some of our clients will tell you there was nothing more satisfying than to start and grow a successful business and see their children (and sometimes grandchildren) assume its management.

In fact, multigenerational family businesses are the oldest and most common form of financial organization globally and include not just small mom and pop corner shops but also over 40% of public companies like Walmart and Samsung.

We have also heard stories of family members who left the farm to “make it big” or had no interest in learning the family trade. Often, those who left had valid reasons and were successful — not at all like in the parable of the prodigal son. What should you do if not all of your kids are on board to run the family business?

This week's money tips: Debunking retirement myths and turning your quarantine clutter into cash

Still, many Americans say they took on more debt last year because of the pandemic, according to NerdWallet's household debt survey.

If you are one of them, or if you have other household debt that's been put on hold, you may not want to rush to pay that money back even if you can. The COVID-19 crisis and its economic fallout are far from over, so you'll want to be strategic when dealing with pandemic-related and other debt.

In 2020, the number of Black and Latino certified financial planners in the U.S. grew 12.6% from the previous year — certainly good news. The more sobering statistic from the CFP Board is that there are still only 1,493 Black CFPs today, and they make up less than 2% of all CFP professionals.

A smart way to spend stimulus money | | wvnews.com

When President Joe Biden asked what critics would have him cut from his COVID relief bill, he got plenty of answers about reducing the $510 billion in aid to state and local governments — including from us.

Now some moderate Senate Democrats are suggesting a middle way: Earmark $50 billion of those funds for broadband investment.

The idea, spearheaded by Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, and Mark Warner, D-Va., is a political crowd-pleaser more likely to attract cross-aisle support than most big spending.

Chinese £3,200 budget electric car takes on Tesla - BBC News

A budget electric vehicle (EV) selling in China for $4,500 (£3,200) is now outselling Tesla's more upmarket cars.

The Hong Guang Mini EV is being built as part of a joint venture with US car giant General Motors (GM).

Last month sales of the budget electric car in China were around double those of Tesla, which was questioned this month over safety issues there.

While the $4,500 Hong Guang Mini is the most popular model, there is an upgraded one with air conditioning for just over $5,000. The cars are being marketed as "the people's commuting tool".

Bill aims to tighten up Ohio's overtime policy, cutting employer costs

But do you add it to your timesheet? Ohio lawmakers are looking to clarify whether you're allowed to.

Those in support of Senate Bill 47 say it would give employers clarity and protection from lawsuits as more people are working from their homes unsupervised. Republican Sen. Bob Peterson, who sponsored the bill, says it's time to look at what counts as paid time on the job and how much of that time is too little to get paid for.

Peterson says the bill was brought up thanks to technology and our reliance on those like smartphones. He notes a lot of us find ourselves drawn to work affairs for a few minutes here and a few minutes there.

Low-Wage Tax Penalty Risks Sparking Contract Labor Boom

A Democratic plan to slap tax penalties on companies with too many low paid workers would drive larger firms to outsource more of their labor unless Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden can plug potential holes in his plan, economists warned.

Wyden's proposal would impose a 5% penalty on a corporation's payroll for paying wages below a yet-to-be-specificed threshold. It's an alternative to the $15 minimum wage hike shot down by the Senate parliamentarian. Democrats are running against the clock as they push to pass a pandemic relief bill by mid-March.

A Return to Science: Evidence-Based Estimates of the Benefits of Reducing Climate Pollution | The

One specific tool — called the "social cost of greenhouse gases" — combines climate science and economics to help Federal agencies and the public understand the benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The metric is a range of estimates, in dollars, of the long-term damage done by one ton of greenhouse gas emissions.

The use of this metric by the U.S. Government began in the Bush Administration and was later standardized across agencies in the Obama Administration. The Obama Administration created an Interagency Working Group of technical experts across the Federal Government to develop uniform estimates, subject to extensive public comment, in order to ensure that agencies utilized the best available science and economics.

Free exchange - The prices of sports cards and odd collectibles are booming, too | Finance &

T HE S&P 500 may be setting new highs, but to really take the measure of market exuberance look no further than Nyan Cat. The animated meme, encoded cryptographically into what is known as a "non-fungible token" (and which is unique and distinct from unencrypted versions of the animation that can be found with a quick internet search), was recently sold at auction for nearly $600,000. Other odd collectibles are booming too.

Markets are not fine-tuned instruments of capital allocation. Rational traders are not always willing or able to bet against nonsensical market moves. Behavioural economists have identified a wide variety of cognitive biases that can lead investors to trade in irrational ways. People overestimate their abilities, are reluctant to realise losses even when prudence dictates that they should, and overreact to small movements in prices, to take just a few examples.

Economics drives glass recycling - AZPM

The City of Tucson now requires glass for recycling to be placed in bins, not curbside containers. Christopher Conover/AZPM

As of Feb. 1, the City of Tucson stopped curbside pick up of recycled glass, but recycling of the material continues.

Until the change, the glass Tucsonans were putting into their curbside bins was trucked to a national glass recycling company, Strategic Materials, in Phoenix. The crushed glass that the company sells to its customers stays in the region and returns to Arizona grocery store shelves quickly.
