Dancer sues strip club, claims violations of federal labor law

Another exotic dancer has sued another Wisconsin strip club over how she was paid — or not paid — to perform, suggesting she and her peers are really employees who get exploited as independent contractors.

In a federal wage lawsuit, Debra Weiss names Texas Jay's North in Birnamwood as the defendant, along with owner John A. Urban and several unknown John Does.

Like similar cases, it alleges that Texas Jay's North failed to pay Weiss and other dancers minimum wage and overtime pay, and illegally kept portions of their tips to pay other club staff.

Massachusetts Economic Stimulus Package Wage and Hour Laws

In 2018, the Massachusetts legislature enacted sweeping legislation , also referred to as the "grand bargain" bill, which, among other things, increased the minimum wage and phased out the Sunday and holiday premium pay requirements with respect to all state holidays except New Year's Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. Those holidays were unaffected by the "grand bargain" legislation and were not subject to the phasedown.

Under Sections 74 and 75 of the new economic stimulus legislation, which amends M.G.L. c. 136 § 16, those three holidays are now included in the "grand bargain's" phase out of the Massachusetts holiday premium pay requirement. The new legislation did not apply to New Year's Day this year because the holiday had already passed at the time the governor signed the bill.

Massachusetts state salary database: See what state employees earned in 2020 - masslive.com

In a year where Massachusetts residents saw historic unemployment levels and business closures across the state due to COVID-19, overtime for state employees increased by roughly 9.3% in 2020. Collectively, state employees took home $2.84 billion with some doubling their take-home pay with overtime, according to a MassLive analysis of state payroll data.

Take MBTA inspector John Keady, who took home $310,198 in 2020. More than half of that — $191,451.55, to be exact — came from overtime pay. Then there's Denise Ferdinand, a nurse who made nearly three times her base salary in 2020 due to overtime. Her total pay in 2020 was about $239,000.

Employment rights review scrapped by business secretary - BBC News

A post-Brexit review of workers' rights will not go ahead, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has said.

It was feared the review would lead to an erosion of job protections, such as the 48-hour week, holiday entitlements and overtime pay.

He told ITV on Wednesday "the review is no longer happening", adding in the Commons on Thursday: "There is no plan to reduce workers' rights."

They argued that the review confirmed their belief that, outside the European Union, the government would start to erode employment safeguards enshrined in EU law.
