ALABASTER – After a great run at the Frios Gourmet Pops storefront location in Alabaster, the business is going mobile.
Owner Michael Weidenbach said he is excited to expand their service area and allow their business to grow in a new direction during the year.
"Our plan for the last few years was to be a brick and mortar business," Weidenbach said. "2020 was an unusual year for brick and mortars, and we decided we would be more profitable with a truck. We closed our store at the end of December and are currently outfitting our new office location, which will have storage for our new vehicles. We're just waiting for the weather to warm up and our season to start."

Shippers looking for scarce sea containers can probably find plenty of them offshore near Southern California’s big ports. A flotilla of cargo ships has been forming near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as bottlenecks pile up. As inbound container volume surges, freight terminals and warehouse operations are also coping with a surge in Covid-19 cases that has hit California and slowed down many cargo handling operations.
Two major railroad workers unions have asked the Department of Homeland Security to beef up security on Amtrak and other passenger lines, including by creating a no-ride list akin to the no-fly list that prevents people identified as risks from boarding planes. The unions say tougher security measures are needed in light of last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol because people who took part in the insurrection and were subsequently placed on the no-fly list may turn to rail travel

Applications for MEDC small business relief grants open Tuesday
Small business owners negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic will be able to apply for a grant of up to $20,000 starting Tuesday.
The Michigan Strategic Fund board on Thursday approved $55 million in grants for small businesses, part of a broader COVID-19 relief bill passed by the Michigan Legislature and signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is coordinating the effort with 15 local or nonprofit economic development organizations that cover the 83 counties across the state awarding the funds.
