The Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act, passed in 2019, granted year-round and seasonal farm employees many of the same labor rights and benefits as workers in other industries including collective bargaining, housing protections, enhanced worker’s compensation protection and overtime pay of one and a half times an employee’s regular wages after 60 hours of work per week and/or if they choose to work on a designated day of rest.

'Upstate wasteland': farmers worried about consequences of increased overtime pay
The Department of Labor's Farm Laborer Wage Board decided Thursday to maintain the 60 hour overtime threshold for farmers and farm workers across New York State until at least November of 2021.
The Board said "The last thing these farms needed were new costs that would drive more of our agriculture industry out of business."
Officials say they urge leaders to continue to reject any new possible burdens on family farms in the state and to look for solutions to help grow the agricultural part of the country's and state's economy.

These may be the final two Opinion Letters of the Trump Administration and perhaps the last two for a while, depending on whether the Biden Administration continues the practice, reimplemented during the current administration, or abandons it, perhaps in favor of the informal administrator interpretation letters issued during the Obama Administration.
Dyer council OKs temporary change to overtime payout for volunteer firefighters | Lake County
DYER — The town has temporarily changed the way it pays employees who also serve on the Dyer Volunteer Fire Department.
During a recent Town Council meeting, the Council considered Ordinance No. 2020-24, which establishes a temporary method of calculating overtime pay for blended-rate employees — a town employee who works in more than one town position and receives different hourly pay for each position.
The ordinance, an amendment to the town's 2021 salary ordinance, stems from compensating volunteer firefighters who also hold jobs with other town departments.

Santa Monica lawmakers recently approved a settlement to pay Santa Monica police officers overtime for work during the May 31 civil unrest and looting.
On December 29, 2020, Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved a settlement to pay Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) officers $85,000 in overtime wages for work related to the events of May 31.
“The City does not admit the allegation, or any entitlement to overtime compensation, but to avoid the expense and burden of further litigation, we recommend settlement,” said Santa Monica City Attorney George Cardona at the meeting.

Gen-Z in China is chafing at the country's traditional work culture. The young-adult workers have adopted a philosophy called "touching fish." This term is drawn from the old Chinese proverb, "muddy waters make it easy to catch fish,'' which loosely means taking advantage of a crisis to chase personal gain.
The younger generation of workers is not aboard with Ma's precepts. As reported by the South China Morning Post , they're known to "slack off by refusing to work overtime, delivering medium-quality work, going to the toilet frequently and staying there for a long time, playing with their mobile phones or reading novels at work."
