Local law enforcement agencies spent at least hundreds of thousands of dollars on their response to recent demonstrations in Spokane that called for the police to be defunded and an end to racial injustice.
The Spokane Police Department paid its officers $470,577 in overtime to cover sizable protests on three consecutive Sundays beginning May 31, as well as several smaller demonstrations in June.
That figure does not include the regular pay of staff dedicated to the events, including salaried employees who do not receive overtime. It also doesn't include meals – when officers spend a long shift covering a protest, the department provides them with food – and other costs like equipment.

Lawmakers were told by administration officials that they are now projecting a $100 million deficit for the county government for 2021, due largely to the loss of sales tax, caused by Governor Andrew Cuomo's shut down orders, which closed businesses and crippled the economy.
Austin receives $1.24 million in federal money for first responder overtime pay, other COVID-19
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Public Safety Office will hand out $41 million in federal money to help cities and counties during the COVID-19 pandemic, he announced Wednesday.
The money is from the Coronavirus Emergency Supplmental Funding program, which is authorized by the Emergency Appropriations for Coronavirus Health Response and Agency Operations Act.
$7 million will be given out in the first round of funding, Gov. Abbott says, and the City of Austin received $1.24 million. All cities in Central Texas to receive money are:

More than a quarter of the $3.2 million paid to Erie County employees in overtime for the Covid-19 response has been collected by top-ranking administrators, according to the Erie County Comptroller's Office.
These are salaried employees who are not normally entitled to overtime but have been allowed to take it under guidelines for federal stimulus money provided to respond to the public health crisis.
Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein has received more overtime billed to the federal stimulus aid package than any other exempt administrator, receiving an additional $84,000 so far, 42% of her annual salary. She oversees and coordinates the county's public health response to the pandemic.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — Another Massachusetts State Police trooper implicated in a department overtime scandal has been fired, and the agency is working to fire five more troopers, the department's commander has announced.
Forty-six current and retired troopers who worked for the now disbanded Troop E, which patrolled the Massachusetts Turnpike, were implicated in the scheme in which they collected overtime pay for shifts they either did not work or did not complete from 2015 until 2017, authorities said.

MIDDLETOWN — In regards to the police department’s proposed budget for fiscal 2021, most of the discussion at Monday’s Middletown Town Council meeting centered on the overtime training for officers.
Of all the overtime line items in the proposed budget, which includes criminal investigation and court appearances, overtime pay for officer training reflects the largest increase (proposed for fiscal 2021 is $126,128, a $20,194 or 19% increase over fiscal 2020).

Additional pay that went to school board employees did not come from overtime and was used to compensate workers who assisted with a meal program for children at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Iberville Parish School Board Superintendent Dr. Arthur Joffrion.
Joffrion made his comments in response to a segment from a Baton Rouge TV station that alleged more than $300,000 in overtime pay went to school board workers.
WBRZ obtained the documents through a public records request, but the report said the records only listed names of the employees and not the amount they were compensated.
