More Mass. troopers punished for role in overtime pay scandal

FRAMINGHAM, Massachusetts — Another Massachusetts state trooper implicated in a department overtime scandal has been fired, and the agency is working to fire five more troopers, the department’s commander has announced.

In addition, 15 troopers face punishment including repayment of fraudulently obtained pay, Col. Christopher Mason said in a Friday statement.

Forty-six current and retired troopers who worked for the now disbanded Troop E, which patrolled the Massachusetts Turnpike, were implicated in the scheme in which they collected overtime pay for shifts they either did not work or did not complete from 2015 until 2017, authorities said.

Quite a lot has been going on:

California, LADWP, schools close, birds, dimmer, Glee: Monday news

Gov. Gavin Newsom calls it a dimmer switch, but for many Golden State businesses, it's lights out. Again. And it's a good gig if you can get it — a security guard at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power pulled in a cool $931,000 in overtime over the past three years. His base salary is around $25,000.

MEMO: LAPD unable to pay overtime following $40 million bill during protests

Those massive protests in LA meant lots of overtime for LAPD rank and file officers or so they thought.

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Police Department officers racked up $40 million in overtime during the recent civil unrest in the city, but won’t be paid for it, and will instead be given comp time, according to a memo sent out by LAPD Chief Michel Moore, which was obtained by FOX 11.

The announcement comes at a time when a growing anti-police movement is sweeping across the country, and L.A. city leaders are planning to slash up to $150 million from LAPD’s budget.

AOC's Campaign Staff Just Ratified a Union Contract

As part of the contract, Ocasio-Cortez campaign staff secured a salary floor of at least $4,000 per month, an $18 minimum wage for hourly employees, and a number of paid leave policies. Notably, the contract caps salaries for managers, making it so that the highest paid employee of her campaign is paid at a rate no more than three times the rate of the lowest paid full-time employee.

The deal also includes paid time off to vote in any election, at least 12 weeks of paid parental leave, an upcoming bonus, a fund to help underwrite classes to help with professional development, and stipends to cover remote work-related expenses and even child care.

The contract also includes language protecting immigrant workers and standardizing gender neutrality.

“We're putting into practice so many of the policies this campaign organizes for every day,” said Ariella Schwartz, events manager for AOC’s campaign and bargaining team member.

Meg Reilly, president of the CWG, told The Intercept that the biggest win in the contract was overtime pay. “CWG has negotiated dozens of contracts and we’ve gotten close, we’ve fought for overtime in every contract, we have won it quite rarely and it’s a big cultural shift,” Reilly said. “So for these campaign workers across industries to get overtime after 40 [hours] is monumental.”

KUOW - The cost of a strawberry: Overtime battle for Washington's farm workers

Strawberry season doesn't mean strawberry shortcake or strawberry jam for Ana. It means long days bent nearly double to snap ripe strawberries from where they grow, near the ground.

* * *

Ana is a farm worker near Mt. Vernon. She moved to the United States from Mexico nearly 20 years ago. KUOW is not publishing her last name because she's undocumented.

The surge of coronavirus cases in the Yakima Valley has focused new attention on working conditions on farms in Washington state. One demand farm workers have been making for awhile: overtime pay.

Why Businesses Get Sued, and What You Can Do About It: Part III | New York Law Journal

Hundreds of recent law graduates are requesting the chance to weigh in on plans for an in-person bar exam in September and the need for an emergency diploma privilege that will allow them to bypass the test.

The proposal is sponsored by state Sen. James Gaughran, D-Suffolk, who said the issue was raised to him through a constituent. The person had been served with a jury notice, but was concerned about being around people due to the coronavirus pandemic, said the Long Island Democrat.
