DENVER — A Colorado man filed a class-action lawsuit this week in U.S. District Court in Denver alleging that King Soopers and parent firms The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) and Dillon Cos. LLC have systematically violated labor laws to withhold overtime pay from assistant store managers.
Attorneys for William Powell, a Littleton resident who worked at a Grand Junction King Soopers store from 2016 to 2019, claim that the grocery store giant incorrectly classifies assistant managers as exempt from overtime pay despite those employees having essentially the same job function as hourly employees who are eligible to be paid time-and-a-half when they work more than 40 hours in a week or 12 hours in a day.

Organizations are having to rethink every process and operational requirement to reopen because of the potential safety risks, and legal risks. Distancing, testing, cleaning, protective equipment, wearing of masks, training and meetings will be everyone's focus in the coming months.
--> In reopening, there may be a requirement for employees who enter the workplace to have their temperature taken each morning or some other health related security screening. Because the lines were long, an employee may be late in reporting to their office. Will this time be compensable, and what will be the consequences for chronic tardiness?

Boston city councilors look to police overtime spending and union contracts | Boston.com
Some Boston city councilors see opportunity to push for the law enforcement accountability and transparency called for by residents and activists in recent weeks in upcoming contract negotiations between the city and police unions.
"With thousands of Bostonians calling for change and accountability in policing, we have to be absolutely more transparent about our police union contracts and discussions, and this cannot be done completely in private and with no sense of (Mayor Marty Walsh) administration's positions at the bargaining table," Campbell said.
Big Changes to California's Garment Industry Possible
On June 25, 2020, the Garment Worker Protection Act, SB 1399 , passed the California Senate in a 25-11 vote. The bill was introduced by State Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, the former secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, who said that it is meant to address long-standing issues for garment workers, "who, when paid by the piece, earn on average $5.15 per hour."
Currently, many workers engaged in garment manufacturing are paid on a piece-rate basis, meaning that they are paid per each item they make, regardless of how long it takes to make the item. SB 1399 would prohibit piece-rate pay for California garment workers. Consequently, if the bill passes, garment manufacturers will need to change their pay structures to ensure that workers are paid on an hourly basis.
Springfield Police pay tens of thousands in overtime costs for protests
"Our primary goal and responsibility is to maintain order and peace in the city and we do that. The cost should be immaterial to folks," said Chief Paul Williams.
Dozens of Springfield Officers were ordered to make sure the protests were safe events, not only for demonstrators but for the entire community.
"We have overtime money in the budget, any overtime costs. Whether it's an officer working a call at the end of the shift or some scheduled events that we need to provide things for, some unexpected things that happen," he said.
