"I think as a global community, we are understanding and acknowledging that there is a lot of racial disparity that exists in our country," said Ibtihaj Muhammad, an Olympic medalist in fencing and co-owner of local clothing brand Louella.
It was also important to Muhammad that her line is manufactured in the United States, and her company works solely with women-owned factories in Los Angeles and New York.
Muhammad said she was fortunate that the seed money for her venture came from her family but that her experience is more of an exception than a rule.

SAN ANTONIO – A fire that was thought to have damaged two businesses, a home and some apartments on the Southwest Side actually caused an even greater loss for one man.
Charles Gutierrez owns a car restoration shop, the single business which occupied all of that space in the 1100 block of Quintana Road, that went up in flames late Sunday night.
He said he heard about the fire shortly after 10 p.m. in a phone call from a friend and rushed over to the property.

Hella Bagels is run out of chef-owner Blake Hunter’s Oakland home, where he is only able to make about 100 at a time. Although Hunter started the business in early March, it’s been an idea he’s had for about two years.
