Marketing and advertising budgets vary widely across organizations. An often-cited statistic from the U.S. Small Business Association suggests spending about 8 percent of gross revenue on marketing if you make under $5 million annually and your net profit parks at 10 to 15 percent. However, a 2016 survey of 168 Chief Marketing Officers found that firms spent a median of 10 percent of their budget on marketing, but some spent as much as 40 percent.
A common beginner error is to allocate the majority of your marketing budget to paid media advertising. Rather than going all-in on top-of-funnel visibility, consider putting a portion of budget toward engaging already-aware consumers in order to maximize revenue.

The CFO's Response to Coronavirus Uncertainty - CFO
Private equity , in particular, has an acute allergy to uncertainty. Due diligence, detailed market projections, investment theses — they're all designed to strip deals of uncertainty given the significant sums of money in play.
Of course, to do the latter, CFOs must begin the former. But, how? What can PE-backed CFOs do now to insulate their companies from the financial risks of the virus? Or, if they can't insulate from, how do they prepare and plan for them? There are several to-do’s (and some critical don'ts), but they generally fall into four buckets:

He said he did so because he believes there is a conflict of interest he couldn't stomach: Board Chairman Ron Fedor has two sons on the Waterford police force, and Reardon was shocked Fedor voted to approve the police department budget on Monday.
"I was surprised that the chairman would've voted on the budget that contained the payroll of two of his sons," Reardon said Wednesday. "I have a difficult time of accepting that as being appropriate. I was left with two choices at that point as a very freshman member of the Board of Finance: to complain and go to ethics, or distance myself from the situation."
UK business community needs budget relief - comment | The Scotsman
Entrepreneurs' relief allows business owners who meet qualifying criteria to pay the 10 per cent rate of capital gains tax when they sell assets rather than the normal 20 per cent. This encourages enterprise and risk-taking by incentivising people to start a business.
When speaking to a group of businesswomen in London last month where he was challenged about his commitment to the measure, he did nothing to suggest he was rethinking his position. While it was reported Sajid Javid was wavering on making significant changes to entrepreneurs' relief, whether his successor Rishi Sunak shares that sentiment is unclear.

SoftBank-backed Oyo lays off thousands in China amid coronavirus — Quartz
Indian startup Oyo's woes are deepening in China, where the deadly coronavirus has taken a heavy toll on the country's tourism and hotel industry.
The budget hotel chain plans to lay off about 30% of its China workforce, or some 3,000 employees. The cuts in China are part of a global layoff of about 5,000 people that will reduce Oyo's headcount to 25,000, Bloomberg reported yesterday .
Founded in 2013, Oyo is effectively a hotel franchise. It finds budget hotels with little visibility or online presence, then renovates and refurbishes them to operate under the Oyo brand.
Legislative session begins Monday, auto insurance rates & budget among the big issues
NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) -Longtime independent insurance agent Dan Burghardt hears the same refrain from customers over and over.
"Why is my auto insurance so high? How can I possibly afford these prices?" Burghardt, who has been an agent or 40 years, said.
On Monday, state lawmakers convene for the 2020 legislative session and auto insurance rates will be a hot topic.
"I think anyone who drives a car or owns a business that has trucks, or any type of vehicle is concerned about the high cost of car insurance. I expect a lot of pieces of legislation to move," Sen. Cameron Henry, R-Metairie said.
Norway budget down slightly for coming year | Lewiston Sun Journal
NORWAY — The proposed municipal budget for the coming fiscal year is slightly less than this year, partly because of energy efficient streetlights, Town Manager Dennis Lajoie advised selectmen Thursday night.
The town saved 11.23% on utility costs because streetlights were switched to LEDs, he wrote in a letter to the board. Other factors include a 3.62% increase in State Revenue Sharing and vehicle excise taxes, and a new health insurance company.
The budget is stuck in what movie people call 'production hell' | Business News | Sky News
Next Wednesday's budget was supposed to be the Conservative government's grand pitch for how it would overhaul the economy and "level up" struggling regions.
It was supposed to be the platform for the Tories' big vision statement about how the economy would look in future decades, with billions spent on investment and the public sector transformed.

The document, and the spreadsheet of measures it entails, was first drafted last autumn. Then the election was called and the fiscal event postponed.
