Why Boosting Workers’ Overtime Pay Could Be Good For Amazon Stock

Amazon ( NASDAQ:AMZN ) stock gained about 9.0% in January. Around mid-February, the stock had risen more than 20% for the year. However, Amazon stock has given up most of its early gains amid to the recent sell-off due to coronavirus fears. Notably, the company isn't alone. Facebook ( NASDAQ:FB ), Alphabet ( NASDAQ:GOOGL ), and Apple stocks have also been impacted due to the coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused many businesses to close. Companies have asked their employees to stay away and work from home when possible. Also, authorities have locked down cities in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

Saratoga County tweaks overtime details during pandemic

BALLSTON SPA — After coming under fire for providing massive pay hikes to essential workers, the county slightly adjusted the plan Wednesday, cutting the number of managers who are receiving time-and-a-half pay and capping such compensation at 35 hours a week.

A total of 32 managers will be paid overtime wages for the first 35 hours they work, and will receive regular wages any time after that. However, another 300 essential employees, a Saratoga County official confirmed, will continue to get time-and-a-half for every hour they work.

Farmers urge wage board not to lower overtime threshold

ALBANY — A cadre of local farmers testified at a Department of Labor wage board hearing on Friday, urging the board not to make additional changes to a new law that sets a 60-hour threshold for farm workers to receive overtime pay.

Many of the farm owners who spoke at the hearing said they would have preferred that the provision of the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act that sets the 60-hour threshold not exist in the first place — but under the law, which went into effect Jan. 1, the wage board can only make a recommendation to lower or keep the 60-hour threshold, not raise or eliminate it.

Top 10 things to know about new FLSA overtime calculations - Lexology

From 15 January 2020, new, more employer-friendly regulations came into effect determining how overtime pay is calculated under the Fair Labour Standards Act (FLSA). The US Department of Labour (DOL) promulgated the regulations to "provide clarity and to better reflect the 21st-century workplace".

The FLSA requires that employers pay overtime at one and one-half times an employee's regular rate of pay for hours in excess of 40 hours per week. There are, of course, some jobs that are exempt from overtime under the FLSA; these regulations affect only overtime-eligible jobs.

Gig worker reforms won't be included in the budget | CSNY

Before the coronavirus pandemic turned the world upside down, it seemed that New York was on track to follow California in granting gig economy workers – like delivery cyclists and on-demand task do-ers – labor protections that they don't currently have as independent contractors.

But now, with the coronavirus occupying most, if not all, of lawmakers' time, it looks like the effort to secure gig workers more labor protections will be put on the back burner. "The world has changed a million ways since January. Things that we thought we were going to be able to negotiate and get passed into law by April 1, don't appear to be likely anymore," state Sen. Diane Savino told City & State on Wednesday.
