Letter: Can property tax deadlines be delayed given crisis? – The Mercury News

There is an as yet untouched opportunity for California to ease the burden of its citizens in this crisis time.

In about three weeks (April 10), a half-yearly property tax payment is due to be paid to county tax collectors. The payment is substantial for many property owners and could be a particularly significant burden for some in the midst of the waves of job losses and the significant losses in 401K and any market investment values.

It would be of great benefit if the April 10 payment deadline were delayed 90 days (as the IRS has already done with the income tax filing deadline) to give residents a chance to sort out their personal situations, start receiving any unemployment compensation they may have applied for and make rational choices on sources of the funds needed for this payment.
