Coronavirus relief money: How much you could receive and how the government will get it to you

Senator Marco Rubio said the bill passed around 11:30 Thursday night. The bill now heads to the House.

It's being called the largest economic rescue bill in history. One of the most popular parts of the 500-page-plus measure is its plan to give direct payments to most Americans.

"Basically the plan is everybody will get something," Dr. Tom Smythe, a financial markets expert at Florida Gulf Coast University said.

Each adult could receive up to $1,200, additionally families would receive $500 per child, according to the stimulus bill.

If you're depressed about all the money you've lost in the stock market, learn to profit

As you have probably noticed, stocks are a wee bit more volatile these days. We've reached levels of volatility similar to what we experienced during the financial crisis in 2008, and before that, the Great Depression. It's pretty intense.

I can tell you one thing: If you can handle this, you can handle anything. I would characterize any move over 2% in the stock market SPX, +1.15% as large. Ten percent is, well, the largest since the crash of 1987.

The Debate Over Money For Everybody : Planet Money : NPR

Jason Furman, a former economic adviser to President Barack Obama, has proposed a coronavirus stimulus package of $1,000 for most American adults, plus $500 for each of their kids. Mark Wilson/Getty Images hide caption

One morning in early March, Jason Furman started thinking about the economic fallout from the coronavirus before driving his 4-year-old son to school. This was back in the pre-pandemic world when kids still went to school. But Furman saw an economic crisis coming, and he spent about an hour sketching out a plan for the government to act. His kid was a little late to school, but it was worth it.

Harriette Cole: Money has made me whiny and childish

Every time my family asks for money, I give them a generous amount. I never give more than they ask, though, since I want to save some for me. I have no problem lending people money if they desperately need it, but lately, money seems to be decreasing in my bank account.

DEAR GREED: The fact that you have a job does not give anyone license to share your money — including your family.

It is perfectly normal for you to use your money for your basic needs, a bit of extracurricular fun and savings. Giving to charity can also be on your list — at a small percentage for now.

Coronavirus: How much money will I get from stimulus package?

After an extended period of negotiation, congressional leaders announced early Wednesday that they have agreed to a $2 trillion relief measure in response to the coronavirus crisis.

Both the Senate and House are expected to pass the bill, and President Trump is expected to sign it by the end of the week.

The stimulus package includes money earmarked specifically for health care providers, businesses and taxpayers.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a news conference Wednesday that more than 1 million residents in the state have filed for unemployment during the crisis since March 13, a sign that the state has been hit hard by its shutdown to prevent the virus’ spread.
