City will pay overtime to employees required to work unpaid hours by former Comptroller Joan

The Scott administration has agreed to pay $119,839 in back overtime wages to eight current and former employees at the comptroller's office as part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor.

The payments will end a DOL investigation into violations of the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act under Joan Pratt, whose 25-year tenure as Baltimore's elected comptroller ended on December 8, 2020.

US Department of Labor finds Hawaii restaurants operator shortchanged cooks in Honolulu, Kailua,

HONOLULU – A U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division investigation found the operator of two Hawaii restaurants denied workers overtime wages, and failed to record the hours of work for its kitchen cooks accurately, both violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act .

Division investigators found Himalayan Kitchen LLC – operator of Himalayan Kitchen restaurants in Honolulu and in Kailua – did not pay salaried cooks the legally required overtime pay when they worked more than 40 hours in a workweek. On average, the cooks worked 10 and a half hours per day.

State may lower overtime threshold for farm laborers, bypasses December deadline - Riverhead News

The state's Farm Laborers Wage Board plans to hold more hearings in January on potentially lowering the overtime work threshold for farm laborers from 60 to 40 hours per week, bypassing a Dec. 15 legal deadline.

Minnesota Supreme Court: Madison Equities must provide payroll records in security guard overtime

The Minnesota Supreme Court issued an opinion earlier this week that will allow the Minnesota Attorney General’s investigation into alleged wage theft at Madison Equities — the largest property owner in downtown St. Paul — to move forward.

Security guards at U.S. Bank Center, the First National Bank Building, 375 Jackson St. and four other downtown properties have alleged they were not paid time-and-one-half overtime rates when they worked at multiple locations .

Crofton police officer receives probation before judgment for charge claiming he falsified

An Anne Arundel County judge sentenced a former Crofton police officer to a year of supervised probation and ordered him to pay $3,830 in restitution after a county police investigation found he falsified timesheets and overtime slips in 2020.

Berney Williams Jr., 34, of Bowie, entered an Alford plea, which allows a defendant to maintain innocence while acknowledging there is enough evidence to convict, to one count of misdemeanor theft, the Office of the State's Attorney of Anne Arundel County announced Monday.

In Jinks v. Credico , an opinion issued on December 13, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declined to extend the application of the state’s highly restrictive independent-contractor statute.

The Massachusetts independent-contractor law, found at Section 148B of Chapter 149 of the Massachusetts General Laws, sets forth the so-called “ABC” test for determining whether a worker may be treated as an independent contractor rather than an employee.

On Wednesday, dozens of Amazon workers walked out at the DIL3 facility in Gage's Park and DLN2 warehouses in Cicero in Chicago. They are demanding a wage increase and safer working conditions. The walkout took place during the Christmas rush, maximizing the impact on Amazon.

At Chicago's Gage Park warehouse, 65 out of an estimated 100 workers signed onto a petition demanding a $3‑per-hour raise and safe staffing at the warehouse. They haven't heard back from management about their demands. ​"They're not taking us seriously, so we're walking out," Miin said.
