The union representing Massachusetts state troopers is accusing the State Police of breaking state and federal labor law by intentionally miscalculating what qualifies as the officers' regular pay and, it argues, costing rank-and-file members millions a year in overtime pay.
The State Police Association of Massachusetts, the powerful 1,900-member union, is seeking at least $18 million in back pay and damages in a lawsuit filed Friday in Suffolk Superior Court.

PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — Following a U.S. Department of Labor Investigation, a Pontiac grocer has been ordered to pay $95,000 in overtime back wages to 14 employees.
The investigation found that the employer of Pontiac's Carnival Market didn't properly pay cashiers, bakers and dishwashers legally earned wages. The grocer must now pay a total of $95,618 in back wages.
The employer violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by failing to pay workers who completed more than 40 hours in a workweek. The owner instead paid workers straight time rates in unrecorded cash for their overtime hours, the investigation found. Additionally, the employer failed to record cash payments made to workers and didn't keep accurate records of the number of hours employees worked.

Boston College alumnus Martin J. Walsh, who has served as the 54th mayor of the City of Boston since 2014, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of Labor under President Joseph R. Biden in a bipartisan vote on March 22.
A graduate of the Woods College of Advancing Studies , Walsh is the third University graduate to serve in the U.S. Cabinet in recent years: BC Law School alumnus John F. Kerry J.D. '76 was secretary of state during the Obama administration, while Ernest Moniz '66, a graduate of the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, was secretary of energy. Kerry now holds a newly-created cabinet-level position as special presidential envoy for climate under Biden.

Locally, the coronavirus affected the 2020 Public Safety budget where $127,648 in overtime pay was directly related to the pandemic, said Police Chief James Riccio, who presented the Public Safety 2021 Budget during a recent virtual council meeting.
In 2020, the department requested $20,971,000 for salary and overtime for some 140 police officers, clerical staff and support personnel. Of the $1,125,000 that was earmarked for overtime, $931,246 was used, which included the unanticipated $127,648 cost mentioned above.
