AUSTIN, TX - The City of Austin Economic Development Department has made a first-in-Texas, citywide investment in cooperatively owned businesses (co-ops) as a tool to build a more robust and equitable economy. In December 2020, Austin City Council approved a contract with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to provide training, coaching, and "How To" information to anyone interested in starting a co-op business or residence.

Hope Smith, manager of the Coffee House, makes an oat milk latte on Wednesday. After owner Mark Shriner launched an online fundraiser this week, customers and business backers showed their support. "I'm amazed," he said.

A plain egg and smoked gouda cheese cromlette is among the pastry options Wednesday at the Coffee House.
It would have taken a lot of lattes and pastries to show the support expressed for Lincoln's locally owned downtown Coffee House through an online fundraiser this week.

The Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce business of the year award went to H-E-B Uvalde, chosen from a pool of 2020 business of the month recipients.
In a social media post, the chamber board thanked H-E-B Uvalde staff for their endurance and dedication to the community during the ongoing pandemic.

FBI statistics underline the horrific cost of business email compromise
The newly-published annual cybercrime report from the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reveals that it had received a record number of complaints and claims of financial loss – with internet crime causing more than $4 billion in losses.
Indeed, according to the FBI’s released statistics , BEC attacks account for losses that are a massive 64 times worse than ransomware.

“BEC comprised 37% of all losses last year. That’s an outrageous figure. Given the fact that “spoofing” is likely a subset of BEC, the total loss number is close to $2.1 billion,” says Crane Hassold, senior director of threat research at Agari. “Ransomware, the topic that tends to get the most media coverage, made up only 1% of cybercrime losses.”

Owner of Purple Fern Bath Co. on Laurel Street, Billman-Arndt is an active member of the downtown community, serving as president of the Destination Downtown Business Coalition and a member of the city's parking commission.
