Local business owners face worker shortage

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - Some business owners in Morgan County are facing challenges with hiring workers for multiple positions.

Looking for workers have become the new normal for some businesses in the county. According to our news partners at the Decatur Daily , Tara Hutchison, Alabama Department of Labor spokeswoman, said the department is hearing reports from employers across the state that workers have become difficult to find.

"We cannot say that it is directly related to any increased unemployment payments or stimulus packages," she said. "Alabama has experienced significant cases of COVID-19, which could have an impact (on worker availability), along with the fact that schools statewide could be impacted by the virus and have gone virtual, thereby forcing some parents to stay home.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft on free-agent spending - In business to win

Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon debate if the Patriots or Buccaneers have had a better start to free agency. (2:01)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose team went on a free-agent splurge that broke the NFL record for guaranteed money spent on signings, described the aggressive approach as strategic.

"It's like investing in the stock market," Kraft said, according to the "Football Morning In America" column . "You take advantage of corrections and inefficiencies in the market when you can, and that's what we did here. We'll see. Nothing is guaranteed, and I'm very cognizant of that. But we're not in the business to be in business. We're in this business to win."

Milford's newest business showcases local product in a tiny space

Tucked off Main Street behind the Beyond Juicery + Eatery is a small sign in a window which advertises the village's newest business downtown: Main Street Gift Co., a new, mostly-online venture started by Beyond's franchise owner Matthew Long.

The business's location serves more as a showroom than a shop designed for browsing: it occupies a few dozen square feet in what was formerly a storage closet associated with the property at 405 Main St. After Long realized he did not need it for storage for Beyond, he began brainstorming what to do with it.
