Tracking Where the Stimulus Money Is Going
Local governments around New York are receiving billions of dollars in combined aid from the federal government to offset the revenue losses created during the pandemic, and a think tank is tracking where the money is going.
The Rockefeller Institute this week released an analysis reviewing how the money will be sent to state, county, and individual local governments. All told, the funding amounts to about $980 per resident.
"One of the lessons we learned in the recovery from the Great Recession is that state and local governments are at the center of a robust economic recovery," said Laura Schultz, executive director of research at the Rockefeller Institute and author of the analysis. "This relief package will help these governments provide assistance to their households and businesses and, importantly, stave off government cutbacks which would likely slow the recovery.

The findings challenge a common financial planning assumption that retirees' spending will increase at the rate of inflation each year. But the research also indicates many people retire without a realistic understanding of how much they can safely spend.
Still, few people relish the idea of having to cut back sharply on their spending in retirement or eking out an existence on $1,543 a month (the current average Social Security check).
Over time, though, most of the households reduced their spending and slowed how quickly they were burning through their savings. After 10 years, the proportion with sufficient funds to last their retirement shot up to 48%.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — More than 60 international agencies are calling for immediate financing to put gains for developing countries back on track after the COVID-19 pandemic led to widening inequalities, the worst recession in 90 years, an estimated 120 million people pushed into extreme poverty and significant losses of tax revenues, trade and foreign investment for many countries.
The Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2021, released by the United Nations on Thursday, also pointed to an estimated 114 million jobs lost during the pandemic, a decrease in remittances which are critical to many poorer countries, and rising debt.
