Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance wants to amplify owners' voices

A new business association officially launched Friday with the aim of supporting and amplifying the voices of Black business owners.

Called the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance (MDBBA), the group started a year ago out of recognition of the specific challenges Black business owners faced in the pandemic. Backed with $1 million from TCF Bank, the group plans to develop programs and advocate for policies that support Black businesses, and offer them the tools and resources to be profitable and sustainable.

The city of Topeka has hired James Jackson to serve as its director of public works. Jackson was previously commissioner of public works for the city of Atlanta. Jackson steps into the new position April 5. Jackson is a certified Public Works Executive, as well as an ICMA Credential Manager Candidate. He has 27 years of experience in public works, having served in various positions in Virginia and Michigan before moving to Atlanta.

The Kansas Health Institute announced Miranda Steele will join its senior leadership team as Director of Strategic Communication and Engagement, effective April 1. In her new role, Steele will oversee all aspects of communication and engagement, including branding, media and public relations, product development and dissemination, and event planning. She will also work to ensure that KHI's nonpartisan research and educational events, held at the KHI Learning Center, are first-in-class.

City to Host Small Business Expo for Procurement Month | City of Little Rock

"The City of Little Rock's Finance Procurement Division transitioned to an online platform in recent years," said Chief Financial Officer Sara Lenehan. Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance launches with $1 million from TCF Bank

A new collective amplifying the voices of Black business owners is forming in metro Detroit, backed with $1 million from TCF Bank.

Conversations about coming together formally have been going on between founding members of the alliance for years, Dean said. But the group began meeting regularly on Tuesday nights last summer. Dean estimates 50-60 businesses have participated so far, though memberships don't open up publicly until Friday.

The alliance also plans to do programming with the NAACP's Detroit chapter and work with the Detroit Pistons later this year on grant-giving.

I guess in the old days you could bring them in and meet them, have dinner with them, you find out the football intellect, find out their character.
