New overtime rule affects up to 20,000 Arizona workers in new year | Local news | tucson.com
WASHINGTON — As many as 20,000 Arizona workers could be guaranteed overtime pay when they do overtime work under a Labor Department rule that took effect Wednesday, Jan. 1, the first change to the rule since 2004.
But critics say the change does not go far enough to protect workers, noting that it would affect only a fraction of those who would have been covered by an Obama administration change that was blocked in court.

There's a reason for that, said Garrick Taylor, a spokesman for the Arizona Chamber of Commerce. He said the previous rule would have created a huge burden for employers by vastly expanding overtime pay.
Employers May Use Fluctuating Workweek Overtime Calculations
A seldom-used alternative method for calculating overtime pay of employees with fluctuating workweeks may soon receive greater attention from employers if the U.S. Department of Labor follows through on a newly proposed rule to loosen the way that such employees' overtime pay is calculated.
On November 5, 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor published a proposed rule which, if adopted by the Department, would include bonuses, "premium" payments, and other additional pay in an employee's regular rate of pay for purposes of calculating any overtime pay for that week.
Despite GOP's attempts to compromise, Wolf says he's not abandoning overtime plan - WHYY
Governor Tom Wolf says he's not backing off his plan to qualify more Pennsylvanians for overtime pay.
He wants to raise the salary cap on automatic overtime, so workers who make more can get time-and-a-half. A new federal rule that took effect this week is already increasing the salary cap on mandatory time-and-a-half pay from $23,600 a year, to $35,500.

Some Republicans had hoped to convince Wolf to stop the planned change by making a deal on one of his longtime priorities, a minimum wage increase. The commonwealth's minimum is $7.25 an hour, the lowest wage allowed under federal law.

The $35,568 threshold is an increase from the previous cap of $23,660, but is significantly lower than the threshold of $47,000 introduced under the Obama administration but blocked by a district court judge in Texas.
The new rule is estimated to cover 1.3 million Americans, Bloomberg Law reports , who will either become eligible for time-and-a-half for hours worked above 40 in one week, or will receive a raise to $35,568 per year.
New year, new laws: Maine's minimum wage increases, rules go into effect for 2020
The $1 wage increase applied to most hourly workers, officials with the Maine Department of Labor said Wednesday.
In addition to the minimum wage increase, the minimum salary for overtime exemption will rise from $33,000 to $36,000. That means if a person makes more than $692 a week, they are exempt from the overtime pay requirement.

"The Maine Department of Labor estimates that approximately 1,600 Maine workers will be newly eligible for overtime pay protection due to the changes as of Jan. 1," Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said in a statement. "The Department's responsibility is to enforce these laws and ensure that employers and workers are aware of coming changes so that they can be ready to meet the laws' requirements.
