DAWN STARNS: New overtime rules tricky for business | Opinion | djournal.com
The federal government has changed the rules over who gets overtime pay. That's put Mississippi's small businesses in a tricky spot. On Jan. 1, more managers qualified for OT.
Basically, federal law says executive, administrative and professional employees who earn above a certain amount are considered exempt from overtime pay. Their paychecks stay the same no matter how many hours they work.
Until the first of the year, the threshold was $23,660. On Jan. 1, it jumped to $35,568. Suddenly, managers and professionals who make, say, $35,000 will get overtime for every hour worked past 40 hours a week.
Employees will only have to work 32-hour workweeks if new Washington Senate bill passes - KXLY
Under this new bill, employees that work more than 40 hours per week will receive overtime pay – no less than time-and-a-half pay for every hour.
The 32-hour limit will not apply in certain cases, mainly regarding employees seeking compensatory time off in addition to a salary or in exchange of overtime pay, and certain employees – including farmers, truck and bus drivers, seasonal employees, and certain contract workers.

Beware of changing small business employment laws
Employment laws throughout the United States continue to broaden, not only in what conduct is prohibited, but in the number of companies now covered by the laws.
While many small chiropractic offices may believe these laws do not apply to them, the elimination of many thresholds which formerly limited these statutes to larger employers make chiropractors now take notice. Though not an extensive list, below is a discussion of some of the small business employment laws that should be on a chiropractor's radar.
Belgian Labor Authority Launches Court Case Against Deliveroo - The New York Times
BRUSSELS — Belgium's labor authority launched the first stage of a court case against British food delivery group Deliveroo on Monday, challenging working conditions for the firm's 3,500 riders in Brussels.
The authority, a division of Belgium's Ministry of Labour, filed the case over the legal status of Deliveroo's riders after an 18-month investigation concluded the company is failing to respect Belgian labor law.
Riders are paid per delivery and considered self-employed, meaning they have no access to healthcare, overtime pay or holidays.
