Should I file taxes jointly or separately if I'm married? - Business Insider

For married couples, one significant way to save on taxes is determining whether you and your spouse should file your tax returns jointly or separately.

In the vast majority of cases, married couples save money by filing jointly —  especially if one spouse works and the other doesn't, one spouse out-earns the other significantly, or you have children. Still, there are special circumstances where it makes sense to file separately. The right filing status for you will depend on your expenses and income.

Illinois' problem isn't the form of taxation, it's the level

Already, some Illinois communities have property tax rates above the point where the only properties that change hands are in bank- or tax-foreclosure auctions. Who would agree to buy a property if the perpetual cost in property tax meant they'd be repaying the entire purchase price every 10 years (i.e., a net property tax rate of 10 percent)?

Where is the inflection point where property tax rates begin to gut property prices? I'd bet it's below 5 percent and possibly below 3 percent. If anyone thinks that property tax rates can continue to rise (for pensions or any reason), they surely do not understand this obvious truth. The property market in the entire state is at risk of literally stopping, except for county officials kicking people out of their homes in order to auction them for 10 cents on the dollar.
