Managing the Trickiest Parts of a Family Business

Directors on the board of family businesses face some unique challenges. Family owners often don’t share the same agenda, and interpersonal dynamics are much more complicated, which can make discussions of CEO succession, compensation, and underperforming executives messy and emotionally fraught. Though tackling these issues may be uncomfortable, family boards cannot afford to treat them like taboos.

Serving on any board of directors is hard, but in a family-owned business, it's even harder. Unlike their public-company counterparts, which focus mainly on increasing shareholder value, family-business boards must act on behalf of stakeholders with multiple and potentially conflicting agendas – for example, co-owners with equal power and completely opposing financial timelines.

Businesses Need a 'Catalyst' to Make CSR Practices Stick - Harvard Business School Working

In short, "Those top-down point solutions have not been shown to be effective and sustainable," Kaplan says.

While companies often have tremendous potential to partner with local communities for the good of all, they often lack the connections, expertise, and financing to get those enterprises off the ground. For that reason, they need a "catalyst" to make such strategies possible.

The trio of thinkers proposed the idea in a 2018 Harvard Business Review article , in which they dubbed such a strategy "inclusive growth." Kaplan, one of the cocreators of the Balanced Scorecard methodology, and Serafeim, an expert on social impact investing, partnered with Tugendhat, who has helped to implement such projects overseas.

Many things are taking place:

Business this week | The world this week | The Economist

The IMF trimmed its forecast for global growth in 2020, to 3.3%. The fund welcomed both the easing of the trade war between China and the United States and the diminishing probability of a no-deal Brexit, but said the prospects for economic growth remain weak overall. America's GDP is expected to expand by 2% in 2020 and the euro area's by 1.3%. Although the clouds are still swirling over Brexit, Britain's economic outlook is slightly brighter than had been forecast in the past.

China's economy grew by 6.1% last year, the slowest pace since 1990. The trade war with America hit already-weak consumer spending and exacerbated a slowdown in the property market. The IMF reckons that China's GDP will expand at an even slower rate, by 6% this year and 5.8% next year.
