3 Money Mistakes I Made With My Kids

Part of being a parent is regretting the mistakes. Here are some of the financial mistakes I made with my kids.

* * *

I set a horrible example by charging anything I could not immediately pay cash for to my credit card, including school clothes, weekend trips, and over-the-top holidays. In an effort to create a world for them that did not actually exist, I mortgaged our future.

If I had it to do over again, I would insist they work -- at least part-time. Working teaches kids what it takes to have money in their pockets, how to deal with different kinds of personalities, and it can also grow their confidence.

Waterloo Police receive reports of 'prop money' - KWWL

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - Over the last month, police in an Iowa town have gotten several reports of prop money, or, more specifically, people trying to pass it off as actual currency.

* * *

"It clearly says 'For Motion Picture Use Only.' It's not legal tender. So we'd encourage anyone accepting bills to take a look and make sure it doesn't say 'Motion Picture Use Only.' It's in big letters, if you look at the bill you'll see it," said Major Leibold with Waterloo Police. Leibold says other than the disclaimer the bills look and feel legit.

John Kerry: Obama administration gave Iran 'a little bit of money'

Former Secretary of State John Kerry denied that money from a $1.7 billion payment the United States made to Iran in 2016 went toward funding Iran's recent attack on U.S. bases in Iraq.

Kerry described the payment as a "little bit of money" and accused Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of lying about what Iran used the 2016 cash payment for. Kerry asserted that most of the money was used to pay off Iranian debts and fund economic programs.

"It's just not true that that money specifically directly went to the IRGC," Kerry continued. "Money is fungible in any budget. The IRGC had its funding; they had its missiles long before we made any kind of arrangement with Iran."

State avoids "loophole" for charter school money, rejects applications for millions -

The Chapelside Academy charter school in Cleveland won't receive any extra money from the state after the Ohio Department of Education blocked an application from its operator, the Accel Schools chain.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Education has blocked a "loophole" that would have given millions in tax dollars to charter schools with bad grades by using another.

The department on Friday announced the 63 charter schools that did qualify to share in the $30 million fund that Gov. Mike DeWine and the state legislature created this summer as a bonus to help the best charter schools in Ohio.

This may worth something:

Next Generation ACO model hasn't saved money, study finds

Rather than reducing Medicare spending, the Next Generation ACO model, which is now in its fifth and final year, added $93.9 million to net Medicare spending during 2016 and 2017, the first two years of the program, the analysis found.

But the results from the study are more complicated, according to David Muhlestein, chief research officer at Leavitt Partners. Medicare can save at most about 1% on spending for beneficiaries in the program because that's how much they take from the ACOs at the beginning of performance years. The fact that the program was a wash for the agency in the first two years doesn't make a huge difference because the bar for saving is so low, he said.

Opinion | Want to Do Something About Climate Change? Follow the Money - The New York Times

We don't want to empty the vaults. Instead, we want people to understand that the money inside the vaults of banks like Chase is driving the climate crisis. Cutting off that flow of cash may be the single quickest step we can take to rein in the fossil fuel industry and slow the rapid warming of the earth.

For comparison, Wells Fargo lent over $151 billion, Citibank lent over $129 billion and Bank of America lent over $106 billion. Since the Paris climate accord , which 195 countries agreed to in 2015, JPMorgan Chase has been the world's largest investor in fossil fuels by a 29 percent margin.

How to know if your vintage CorningWare is worth some serious money

At least one vintage CorningWare dish has sold for more than $10,000 on eBay, and the internet is taking note.

* * *

Did someone die and their Corning ended up at Value Village? I couldn't imagine why there is so much today!

Check out this casserole dish, which went for about $17,504 in Australian currency -- which is around $12,000 in U.S. dollars.

As is the case with all collector's items, it's hard to know what your personal belongings could truly sell for. Despite how valuable or invaluable something might be, our stuff is really only worth what someone will pay for it at any given time.

State DOTs Want More Money, Fewer Regulations – Streetsblog USA

State transportation leaders want federal cash to continue to flow over the next six years with no increase in the percentage for mass transit and without having to prove any progress for maintaining existing roads or making them safer.

“We've largely maintained an emphasis on honoring the 80-20 split, and I imagine that kind of balance will hold,” Susan Howard, the program director for transportation finance for the association of state transportation officials, told Streetsblog. “ We h aven't taken a position on expanding the transit ratio. If we expand funding overall, then we will be able to tinker with the ratios .”
