FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) — Two dozen new Texas laws went into effect this week — several of which the changes could help homeowners save thousands of dollars on property taxes.
"A lot of people don't know the money they could be saving," said J.R. Martinez with Kenneth Jones Real Estate and the Great Fort Worth Association of Realtors.
Texans over 65 years old, veterans and their surviving spouses, and people with disabilities may be eligible for tax breaks they don't know about. Senate Bill 2060 makes those exemptions harder to miss.

In separate statements, House GOP Leader Jim Durkin and Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady both asserted that preliminary findings of the task force were not properly approved by the full panel and, as Brady put it, amount to "some members . . . circulating their thoughts."
Rep. Sam Yingling of Round Lake, the House Democrat who was one of the task force’s co-chairs and increasingly has served as its point person, denies that.
"In order to address the property tax crisis, everything must be on the table," wrote Yingling, who did not return phone calls. "No caucus has exclusive rights to good ideas; all input is needed. It is important we have a solid report to advance to the next phase of this endeavor, the legislative process. We look forward to the specific edits being proposed by the House Republicans."

At the start of this year, Utah has begun a pilot Road Usage Charge program , coupled to an increase in registration fees for alternative fuel vehicles.
But Utahns with EVs have an alternative. Instead of paying that flat fee, they can enroll in the pilot program that involves fitting a telematics device to the car. The device tracks the actual number of miles driven on Utah's roads.
