LAKE PLACID — Two firms of certified public accountants — the Hoffman Eells Group, with offices in Lake Placid and Malone, and the Plattsburgh-based Abbott, Frenyea & Russell — announced Friday that they merged their business operations starting Jan. 1.
With offices in Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Malone and Canton, the expanded business will serve Essex, Franklin and Clinton counties.
The combined firms will continue under both names and retain all present employees except for Patrick Russell, CPA, a senior partner of Abbott, Frenyea & Russell who is retiring.
FASB Homes In on Key Accounting Issues in 2020 as Chairman's Term Nears End - WSJ
The U.S. standards setter is preparing for a changing of the guard as Chairman Russell Golden steps down at the end of June after seven years in the position. And for at least the remainder of Mr. Golden's term, the board is focused on two issues: differentiating liabilities from equity and improving the measurement of goodwill. Those are among the more significant proposals the FASB expects to address before June.
"With less than seven months left in my term, I'm reminded of Yogi [Berra]'s most famous quote, 'It ain't over 'til it's over,' " Mr. Golden said this month at a conference hosted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Washington.

PROVIDENCE — Piccerelli Gilstein & Company LLP, an independent accounting firm, has announced that Doryanne Hamel, of Westerly, has been named a partner, effective Jan. 1.
Hamel, a certified public accountant, works with closely held businesses in a number of industries and has been responsible for the audits of privately held companies and employee benefit plans with gross revenue ranging from $2 million to $2 billion. She also assists clients obtaining Rhode Island tax credits, including credits for movie productions, jobs incentives and historic preservation.

Proposal would delay lease accounting effective date for federal entities - Journal of Accountancy
Implementation struggles experienced by federal agencies have prompted the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB) to propose delaying the effective date of its standards for accounting for leases for two years.
Under the proposal , Statement of Federal Financial Accounting Standards (SFFAS) 54, Leases: An Amendment of SFFAS 5, Accounting for Liabilities of the Federal Government, and SFFAS 6, Accounting for Property, Plant, and Equipment , would take effect for reporting periods beginning after Sept. 30, 2022.
