Last week I read that a Black accountant was appointed as managing partner of a Top 50 CPA firm, and another was chosen as chairperson of the AICPA Private Companies Practice Section executive committee.

To begin, Steven Harris was chosen as the managing partner of RubinBrown. He started his career there and worked his way to the top. Regardless of his race, I find this an extraordinary accomplishment. However, being Black makes what he did even more remarkable.

The Budget and Economic Outlook - AAF

Yesterday the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its latest "baseline" outlook for the federal budget and U.S. economy. (A baseline is constructed by assuming that current law on the books remains unaltered for the next 10 years.

Three things jump out. First, deficits decline over the next two years, but only because of the end of the massive pandemic response. They remain elevated and are rising both in absolute magnitude and relative to gross domestic product (GDP) as time passes.

HONOLULU – A federal investigation has recovered $33,399 in back wages and liquidated damages for 14 underpaid workers of an Oahu tour operator who denied crew members on a company tour boat their overtime wages.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division determined that Ocean Journeys LLC – operating as And You Creations – failed to pay the required overtime pay rates for hours over 40 in a work week, a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act .

Operator ordered to pay $3M in back wages over overtime violations

An Illinois nursing home chain has been ordered to pay close to $3 million in back wages to thousands of workers after a federal investigation found the company failed to pay correct overtime to workers, the Department of Labor announced Monday. 

Petersen Health Care Inc. of Peoria, IL, must pay $2,939,576 in back overtime wages to more than 3,000 caregivers to resolve the investigation. The violated employees work in 84 resident nursing care facilities across three states.
