Too many Ohioans work hundreds of extra hours each year and don’t get paid overtime for them.
Right now, companies don’t have to pay overtime to salaried workers who earn more than just $36,000 a year. That salary threshold is so low and so out-of-date that it leaves 85 percent of salaried workers behind.

The legislation would eventually ensure 55% of all salaried employees are eligible for overtime, according to its sponsor.
A bill introduced Wednesday would raise the salary threshold for overtime exemptions to $45,000 annually and increase the minimum each year until it reaches $75,000 in 2026.
City Council Poised to Boost Firefighters' Overtime Pay
The Portland City Council is poised to vote Wednesday on an agreement with the Portland Firefighters Association that would offer pay increases to firefighters required to work mandatory overtime due to understaffing.
If the council approves the deal, firefighters will receive an additional $100 per mandatory overtime shift they work. The ratification of the agreement would also nullify any ongoing disciplinary action for firefighters that refused to work a mandatory overtime shift.

The San Francisco Police Department's increasing dependence on using overtime resulted in 131 employees making more than $100,000 in overtime last fiscal year — up from 26 the year before.
The highest overtime earners were sworn staff. When adding in overtime and other pay, 715 police employees made more than $200,000 — up from 436 the year before. Of those, 51 workers made more than $300,000 last year — up from 15 the year prior.

On May 2, 2022, the Supreme Court granted certiorari on Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. v. Hewitt , a case about whether a tool-pusher on an oil-rig was wrongly denied overtime pay.
