Zermatt, a ski resort town of 5,400 residents in Switzerland, has decreed that cryptocurrency bitcoin can now be utilized to pay taxes and other government services, Bloomberg reported.

Mayor Romy Biner-Hauser confirmed that her residents can now pay for an array of traditional government services using bitcoin. Broker Bitcoin Suisse will accept the payments through a tablet computer that converts the popular digital currency into francs, then transfers the funds to the municipal government.

Apple investors are cheering a record quarter why tax collectors might be too - MarketWatch

While Apple AAPL +2.09% investors and analysts are applauding the tech giant's record quarterly results , tax collectors are likely feeling good about the news too.

A family of four paying $1,200 a year for four wireless lines paid an estimated $260 on taxes, fees and surcharges on their devices last year, according to an analysis in 2019 from the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning think tank.

This could be the best tax decision you make all year

Now that tax season is officially underway, millions of working Americans will soon start gathering paperwork and reading up on ways to shield their income from the IRS. And there are plenty of valuable tax credits and deductions that can help you accomplish the latter. But if your goal is to save money on taxes, perhaps the single best way to get there is to make the one move that will also set you up for a financially secure future: contribute to a traditional retirement savings plan.

Filing taxes sooner helps prevent identity theft - WXOW

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Filing taxes earlier rather than later can help prevent identity theft, and there are local options for those who cannot afford a handler fee.

Filing one's tax returns with the IRS eliminates the option of someone else attempting to use that same number as a fraudulent social security number.

"The earlier you file, [then] nobody will have a chance to use your social security number," H&R Block Master Tax Preparer Tammy Pedersen Marker said. "So if you get yours in early, then no one can do it, so you won't probably have identity theft."

Other voices: Lesson from California: Roll back marijuana taxes to save legal market – Twin

California’s legal marijuana industry has been a bust, falling far short of the sales projected when voters legalized it in 2016.

Unfortunately, high taxes, a slow-moving permitting process and local government resistance has stifled the ability of the legal market to better get off the ground.

Estimates from Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics suggest that black market sales of marijuana continue to make up the vast majority of marijuana sales in the state. Surveys of consumers have suggested that one factor keeping marijuana consumers away is the high rate of taxes.

Warren, Sanders wealth taxes could double US trade deficit, study finds

Wealth-tax proposals championed by Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders could significantly increase the trade deficit over the next decade, according to a paper published this week.

The Tax Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., estimated that the average trade deficit from 2020 to 2029 would more than double under both progressive candidates' proposals. The deficit would increase from the Congressional Budget Office's estimate of 3.10 percent to 6.94 percent under Warren's proposal and 7.53 percent under Sanders'.

CFOs No Longer Need Accounting Background | PYMNTS.com

Having an accounting background is no longer a must for a company's chief financial officer (CFO), according to a report by The Wall Street Journal .

For example, when directors of Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure Capital were looking for someone to fill the role, they were more worried about hiring someone who had experience with raising debt and equity, and they didn't care if the person was a former accountant.

Orange County Great Park auditor surrenders accounting license after legal battle with state

An Irvine firm that conducted two audits of the Orange County Great Park surrendered its accounting license on Monday after the California Board of Accountancy said it "failed to comply with professional standards, engaged in numerous acts of negligence, and disseminated false and misleadingly information."

The state agency had filed a complaint in January 2018 — later updating it in March 2019 — against Hagen, Streiff, Newton & Oshiro (HSNO). In addition to the license forfeiture, the firm agreed to pay a $150,000 penalty and a reimbursement of $400,000 to the state accountancy board.

The board also decided they could do without one particular qualification. Having appointed a chief accounting officer in 2017, they didn't care if the new chief financial officer had an accounting background.

How to Make Your Family Business More Professional

Most family businesses “become more professional” by the third generation, but skilled, solid employees may decide that they’d rather work somewhere that’s more structured, fair, and professional in the meantime. How can the business keep the benefits of a family operation while accelerating the professionalization that will be attractive to both family and non-family members?

Make it meaningful to work at your company. When the family's vision, values, and goals are well communicated  and accompanied by a clear operating or business philosophy, employees feel they understand why they're there and where they fit in the grand scheme.

The 5 Worst Things To Do With Your Money

You may want a big house, but don't buy based on emotion. A house is a place to build memories, not an asset that will automatically appreciate in value. Maybe it will; maybe it won't. If you find your dream home, make sure you can afford the mortgage payments. Separate the beauty from the cost of the house - they are two different things. One is for you to enjoy; the other you need to pay for.

* * *

Simply put, if you decide to invest your money, remember this: only invest in things you understand. Don't invest in a "hot stock" because you read about it online or saw it on TV. Understand what you are buying and assess the underlying risks. Don't take someone else's recommendation. Do your own independent research. Warren Buffett invests in stocks and business models that he understands. This doesn't mean you can't learn about a new industry or business. Just spend the necessary time to

7 Ways My Kids Have Cost Me More Money Than Expected

It's no secret that raising children costs money. The typical middle-income family will spend a whopping $233,610 to bring up a child, not including paying for college.

I always knew that having kids of my own would put a huge strain on my budget. But through the years, I've been downright shocked to see just how expensive some of the costs associated with them have been. Here are a few in particular that have caught me off-guard. Repeatedly.

I had twin daughters three years after having my son and I transitioned back into freelance work so I could do my job from home. Frankly, the cost of full-time daycare for three children would've virtually wiped out my salary, and it wasn't worth it.

What to Do When a Friend Owes You Money and Is Avoiding You - VICE

If someone has owed you money for two months, it's easy to get very worked up about what a bad friend they are. But so often, the person has just forgotten about the situation entirely, and would be mortified to know you were stressed about bringing it up to them.

So give them the benefit of the doubt and approach them with an open, neutral tone. If the socially acceptable padding of a few days has gone by when you make this ask, giving them a firm deadline a few days out is a nice thing to do. So you could say, "Hey, I'm not sure if you saw my Venmo request from Monday for the Airbnb, but would you mind accepting that?"

Is Social Security Really Running Out of Money?

Now let's get back to Social Security's trust funds. Right now, those funds can be tapped to bridge the gap between what Social Security owes in benefits and the revenue it takes in. But many fear that once those funds are exhausted, benefits will no longer be payable.

Thankfully though, that's not true, and the reason is this: Social Security gets the bulk of its revenue from payroll taxes. Currently, wages of up to $137,700 are subject to a 12.4% Social Security tax. The tax is split evenly between employees and employers, though self-employed workers pay the whole thing. As such, Social Security is not at risk of running out of money, because as long as we have a workforce and continue taxing wages, the program will have revenue coming in.'

Influencer Marketing on a Tight Budget: Incentives to Offer Beyond a Big Payout | Social Media

Many organizations want to work with influencers to gain attention and drive results, but few have the budget to make it happen.

When working with a non-existent or limited budget, you need to identify what your company can uniquely offer to influencers instead of always paying for their support. The goal here isn't to take advantage of influencers, as I'm a big proponent of reasonably paying them for the value they're able to provide. Instead, my advice is to find a mix of approaches for incentivizing influencers so that these partnerships don't require a budget, or are less costly.

Chuy's to pay more than $100,000 in back wages for violating minimum wage, overtime requirements

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - A news release from the U.S. Department of Labor says an investigation into Chuy's Mesquite Broiler by the Wage and Hour Division determined the restaurant must pay $114,964 in back wages and damages to 55 employees and $20,372 in civil penalties for violating minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

WHD investigators found the employer failed to pay some employees for all the time that they worked. The employer violated FLSA provisions when the wages they paid failed to meet the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for all the hours they worked. Overtime violations resulted from the employer's practice of paying employees for only their first 40 hours each workweek by payroll check, paying for any overtime hours either in cash, or in a separate check, at straight-time rates.

Clarity's cost: The $5M comma | Opinion | morganton.com

In 2014, you see, drivers for a dairy company in Portland, Maine sued their employer for overtime pay because a state law pertaining to overtime-pay exemptions failed to include the Oxford comma.

It's the final comma in a list of things, Grammarly explains. In Grammarly's example, the Oxford comma appears after the word "eraser": "Please bring me a pencil, eraser, and notebook."

Few use the Oxford comma anymore. Most newspapers, for instance, edit articles according to the Associated Press Stylebook, which does NOT use the Oxford comma.
