The Week in Business: Slowing Job Growth - The New York Times

After many consecutive months of jobs reports showing strong gains, new jobs data on Friday appeared to begin breaking the mold. The economy gained 223,000 jobs last month, a slight decline from the November total of 263,000, which was similar to the September and October numbers.

Meta, already struggling with its vision for the metaverse, a plummeting stock price and mass layoffs , ran into another obstacle for its business last week when regulators in the European Union determined that the company was illegally forcing users to effectively accept targeted ads.

This week: House begins legislative business after Speaker spectacle | The Hill

The House is set to begin its legislative business on Monday after last week’s four-day Speaker election spectacle, which ended with Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) securing the gavel following 15 rounds of voting.

The House on Monday will take up a rules package for the 118th Congress, marking the first piece of legislative business in the new session. The chamber was unable to bring any bills to the floor until a Speaker was elected.

Alkek Foundation grants $1M to renovate the business building

The Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation has awarded St. Mary's University a five-year grant of $1 million to renovate the Albert B. Alkek Building for the Greehey School of Business .

St. Mary's University has received nearly $8.7 million from the couple, their corporation and their foundation over the years. Albert B. Alkek attended St. Mary's and was a member of the Board of Trustees.
