For 2020 Woodbury resident Catalina Chew is expanding operations in accounting, tax and business finance consulting, serving Long Island individuals, companies after nearly two decades working for corporations in the Boston area and in her native Manhattan.
The first order of business within her company, Accounting Brew, is to provide the community with useful, appropriate information on tax reform, 'adding' value with her expertise and perspective as an experienced corporate controller and manager with large investment and real estate firms. Chew's four-year-old son attends the TOBAY Day School for pre-kindergarten located at 140 Syosset Woodbury Road in Syosset.

The Massachusetts Society of CPAs held its biannual Educators Conference at Bentley University, with a theme of "Perspectives on a Changing Profession."
Last week's event featured more than 60 members of academia, accounting faculty and college advisory boards to discuss how modern technology is impacting the accounting industry and how to best prepare students entering the profession.
Attendees heard about how to best integrate technology into an accounting curriculum, as well as feedback from local employers and young professionals on what skill sets firms are currently seeking.

City-hired accounting firm finds no inaccuracies, errors in Edmond water bills after residents
EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) – An audit of Edmond water bills – performed after numerous complaints of exorbitantly high bills – found no evidence of water bill inaccuracy or interference.
The City of Edmond selected and hired Arledge & Associates, an accounting firm, to complete an independent audit of water billing accuracy and procedures from summer 2019, according to a City of Edmond news release.

Twice a day, the evacuees have their temperatures checked by medical staff in protective gear. They are forbidden to stray from a small patch of land on a base filled with armed military personnel. So they have found creative ways of filling the days.

More Companies Are Opting for Hedge Accounting
Early adopters of the new hedge accounting standard that took effect for public companies' 2019 fiscal years drove an uptick in the use of hedge accounting in 2018, new research shows.
Chatham Financial's analysis of corporate hedging in 2018, the latest year for which hedging data can be compiled, indicates that 53% of U.S. public companies with commodities hedging programs applied hedge accounting to them.

We receive a fairly steady stream of press releases from accounting firms announcing that they are rebranding themselves to varying degrees, and I often wonder whether there is much point behind these exercises. How much difference can a new color scheme, or a new logo and tagline, or even an entirely new name make?

Gig work growing inside companies | Accounting Today
Forget Uber and TaskRabbit: A growing cohort of the gig workforce is actually working long-term inside traditional companies — and they're pretty happy about it, according to new research from ADP.
The number of these gig workers has grown 15 percent over the last decade, at a rate faster than the overall workforce, and they've increased their share of the workforce by 2.2 percentage points.

"Only 10 percent of respondents say they're doing it because they can't find traditional work. So it's really a choice," Yildirmaz told Accounting Today . "I was surprised — I wondered if they were doing it because they can't find jobs, but that's not the case. These are really highly skilled people who don't need benefits."
