What your 18-year-old self wish they knew about saving money – Daily News

Basic financial planning is not a subject taught at most schools. Our children learn about advanced subjects such as science, technology, engineering and math, but they are not given the same opportunity to learn about personal finance, a subject that affects everyone.

Unless children are taught by family how to manage money from an early age, it can become a challenging learning experience.

When my dad was 16 years old, he woke up very early one morning to see his dad quietly leave the apartment for the darkened streets of Antwerp, Belgium.

He was meeting his business partner under cover of night to divide up cash and goods from their business so he could take my dad and grandmother away from the encroaching Third Reich to Lisbon, Portugal, and then ultimately for the United States.

'Free money' comes from ... our pockets | Editorial | oleantimesherald.com

With teacher layoffs hitting Portville amidst multimilliondollar facilities expenditures, students have been heard asking why repaving parking lots and buying statues of Panthers is more important than retaining teachers.

By way of simple illustration, Portville School District collects $10 in taxes, which is sent to Central Planning (Albany). Central Planning keeps $1 for administration costs, returns $4 to us for teacher salaries and puts the other $5 into its "Facilities Upgrades" fund, nicknamed "free money.

'Where'd the money go?' How to handle a windfall

A 2021 study published in Journal of Family and Economic Issues found that emotions tied to money can dictate whether we decide to spend or save a windfall — even in a crisis environment.

Tax refunds. Child tax credits. COVID-19 relief checks. We dream of the next unexpected bundle of money that lands in our lap. Perhaps it's a few hundred dollars earned from a garage sale, maybe even more from a job bonus — or hundreds of thousands from a winning lottery ticket or inheritance.

Thank you to council for budget restoration | News, Sports, Jobs - The Intermountain

A week ago several volunteers and public servants felt hopelessly unappreciated when the Elkins City Council Finance Committee proposed a plan to cut the heart out of the City budget by reducing funding for “outside” agencies by 60% or more.

The City proposal for unexpected budget changes was devastating to organizations that function on very small budgets. They have had to apply for grants to be able to offer services to our community.

Criminal Justice Reform Discussion Slows Budget Action | Nebraska Public Media

Action on the state budget switched into slow-motion in the Nebraska Legislature Thursday, reflecting a continuing standoff between advocates of building a new prison and advocates of criminal justice reform.

What was officially on the agenda Thursday was the second of three rounds of debate on the state budget. But what Sen. Steve Lathrop wanted to talk about was criminal justice reform. And because he was at the head of the line to file amendments, he and his supporters controlled the debate.

Rossi: West Haven personnel increases in proposed budget 'sorely needed'

WEST HAVEN — In the grand scheme of things, Mayor Nancy Rossi's proposed budget is one targeted at restoration just as much as growth.

With a proposed 301 employees on the city's payroll in fiscal year 2023 — a seven-employee increase from the current fiscal year — it would be the highest level of staffing since 2016. But Rossi does not view it as an expansion.

December 2019 brought significant change to the rules on retirement accounts through the enactment of the SECURE Act (the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act). Recently, on February 23, 2022, the IRS released proposed regulations that reflect changes to the SECURE Act.

Under the original rules of the SECURE Act, many interpreted the law that non-eligible designated beneficiaries would be allowed to distribute the entire retirement account at the end of the tenth year and not be required to take annual distributions.

People who don't understand economics shouldn't opine on economic matters. (In my opinion, they also shouldn't vote, especially about how to spend taxpayer money.)

If you think that companies across the board increase profits [Letters, March 20] by raising prices, you are ignorant of economics. In a properly competitive market, firms increase market share by decreasing prices, and by improving efficiencies to keep their own costs down.
