But Will It Delay Tax Returns? What We Know

Monday marked the first day the IRS is accepting tax returns and millions will file their 2025 taxes today, but with a possible government shutdown in January 2026, and Senate vote this week, taxpayers may wonder when they'll get a refund check or direct deposit. Could a government shutdown affect tax refunds for the 2026 tax filing season , or will a partial government shutdown delay tax refunds in 2026? Taxes are due April 15; however, according to a recent survey by Intuit Credit Karma of over 1,000 U.S. adults, 52% expect a refund this year, and 54% plan to file early to get their refund faster.

During the 2025 shutdown, it was believed IRS funding would continue and the IRS would function as usual. However, after five days of the shutdown in November, half of the IRS' nearly 74,000 employees were furloughed, and most IRS operations ceased. E-filing and payments continued, but refunds, in-person and telephone assistance, audits, appeals, and paper processing were delayed or suspended.
