Malnourished children with withered arms have been arriving at clinics in Afghanistan for months now. Although the markets are full of food, too many people lack the money to buy it. Since U.S. forces withdrew and the Taliban seized control in August, prices have skyrocketed.

Some of this is the inevitable result of the Taliban takeover. The Afghan government had been heavily dependent on foreign aid , which was largely cut off when the Taliban took power.

Australia regulator expands money laundering probe at casino firm Star | Reuters

The sector has been plagued by a slew of regulatory inquiries in Australia and the development highlights casino firms' shortcomings in managing strict oversight of alleged money laundering at their gambling hotspots.

Aging bridges are target of $27 billion in infrastructure money - The Washington Post

The Biden administration urged states on Friday to get to work bringing thousands of aging bridges up to par, while improving safety and uncorking bottlenecks, with the help of $27.5 billion in new federal aid.

The White House announced the allocation of money to mark 60 days since President Biden signed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill. The bridge program is one of the largest new sources of federal spending in the package and one that encapsulates its bipartisan appeal.

I write this newsletter from Belfast, where the DeLorean sports car – most famous for having been used as Marty McFly's time machine in the Back to the Future movies – was manufactured.

Let's go back to 2000. I taught my very first lecture at Queen's University Belfast that year. The topic was money and the debate in class focused on the possibility and merits of a futuristic cashless society. That year more than three-quarters of total payments were made in cash.
