Trump Administration Escalates Global Fight Over Taxing Tech - The New York Times

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration said on Tuesday that it would open an investigation into taxes on digital commerce that have been adopted or proposed in nine countries and the European Union, escalating a global battle that will affect where big American tech companies like Facebook and Amazon pay taxes.

The administration's move could ultimately lead to American tariffs on imports from Brazil, Britain, India and a host of other countries, heightening the chances of another global trade dispute that results in retaliatory taxes on U.S. goods.

Why small business owners may want to file taxes AFTER July 15 deadline - MarketWatch

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the IRS postponed the usual deadlines for: (1) paying what business taxpayers will owe Uncle Sam with their as-yet-unfiled federal income tax returns and (2) taking several actions that can affect what will be owed with those returns.

So, if your business entity's federal income tax return is still awaiting completion, you may have more tax planning flexibility than you thought, and you have plenty to think about in that regard. Ditto for individual taxpayers who own pass-through business entities.

Monterey folks weigh in on police budgets, hotel taxes – Monterey Herald

MONTEREY — Residents on Monday questioned the need for the relative abundance of cash flowing into the police department while other services are being dramatically cut, and at the same time encouraged officials to jack up the city’s hotel tax to offset some of the cuts.

Heading into Tuesday night’s city council meeting, City Manager Hans Uslar hosted a virtual town hall meeting to allow residents to comment on a budget reduction plan to meet a $31 million shortfall over a two-year budget cycle.
