ASHEVILLE - City officials are exploring ways to boost local businesses by allowing more commercial activity to happen in public spaces.
That could take many shapes, according to a newly created page on the city's website, Public Space Usage During COVID-19: Supporting Asheville's Recovery .
But it would likely create new opportunities for local restaurants, which have had their operations restricted by state mandate since March 17.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Mike McAndrew isn't walking into Three Saints Barbershop he owns in Jessup to cut someone's hair. These days, he goes in just to pick up the mail, or adjust the temperature keeping the place running while the bills pile up. With no customers and no cash, McAndrew is here because he loves it.
"When you are a business owner, you love coming to work. You don't dread Mondays, you look forward to Mondays. You never hear a business owner saying, 'thank God it's Friday.' We want to work. It's what we love to do," McAndrew said.

The Key to Successful Succession Planning for Family Businesses
Successfully passing the baton to the next generation is a goal for many family business leaders. It can also be a sound business move if the right steps are taken. By clearly communicating family succession intentions, developing strong relational bonds, and proving the fitness of next generation leaders, family firms can achieve buy-in from their nonfamily employees.
We reviewed more than thirty years of research on nonfamily employees in family businesses, and the findings suggest that contrary to conventional wisdom, the solution is not to discard family succession altogether. Our research actually finds that nonfamily employees often prefer family successors to nonfamily outsiders because of the family-like cultures that accompany family succession.

Almost 51 percent of comments added to the end of the survey said that businesses should be allowed to reopen in some capacity, while almost 32% of commentators said the county should delay further reopenings and prioritize safety, the chamber reported.
Alaska faces a 'generational loss' as small business owners turn out the lights
The coronavirus is pushing local businesses to the brink, and some are calling it quits. That's despite unprecedented sums in government aid that are pouring into the state to help small businesses.
More than a third of Anchorage business owners said COVID-19 put their enterprises in danger of permanent closure, or were unsure if they would remain open, according to an April survey by the Anchorage Economic Development Corp.
Jonathan White sits on the Anchorage Economic Resiliency Task Force, but don't look to him to paint a rosy picture. White said the business model for retail, food and customer service has to change so dramatically that "a lot of businesses are asking if it's even worth it."
