The surge in antisemitism following Hamas' 2023 attack on Israel has led to a significant shift in the way some Jewish Americans approach personal safety. One 53-year-old Jewish mother from Cleveland, who wished to remain anonymous, exemplifies this change. Prior to October 7, she had never considered owning a gun, feeling uncomfortable with firearms.
However, the rising threat of danger to her family prompted her to join a local Jewish gun club. This club, Lox ⁘ Loaded, was established in Chicago earlier this year and has rapidly expanded to 15 cities across the United States, including Florida, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, and New York. With over 1,000 members, it marks a notable departure from the historical trend of Jewish Americans being one of the least gun-owning demographic groups in the country.
The club's growth and other indicators suggest that more Jewish individuals may be considering gun ownership in response to the changing security landscape. The increase in antisemitic incidents has contributed to a growing sense of unease among Jewish communities. In response, some have turned to social media influencers, such as New York City's Lizzy Savetsky, who has nearly 500,000 followers.
