Area Public Works Officials Slam Mass. Regulations On Truck Emissions

A state law passed by the Legislature and signed by former Gov. Charlie Baker in 2022 mandates that Massachusetts achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Net zero means removing the same amount of carbon from the atmosphere that's pumped into the air from transportation, manufacturing and other sources.

One of the Massachusetts measures, the heavy-duty omnibus regulation , requires carmakers to sell engines that produce lower emissions. The other, the advanced clean trucks regulation, mandates a certain percentage of carmakers' overall sales are made up by electric vehicles that produce zero emissions.

Pushback against the regulations resulted in state officials extending the omnibus measure out one year. That means it will take effect starting with the sales of trucks that have a 2026 model year.
