Evolving accounting's storytelling around staff | Accounting Today

Many of the proposed solutions to the talent shortage focus on recruiting new accountants or exploring new talent models. However, it is imperative to also renew our focus on retaining the talent we already have.

DoorDash, Shifting Business Model, Will Offer Drivers Hourly Pay - The New York Times

DoorDash said on Wednesday that it would begin giving its delivery drivers the option to be paid an hourly minimum wage, instead of earning money for each delivery.

The significant shift in compensation could be an answer to concerns that some delivery people are not paid fairly. It could also add an incentive for drivers to pick up smaller orders that don't pay as well and that they would typically avoid.

HR Hotline: How Do We Calculate Overtime Pay During a Holiday Pay Period? » CBIA

A: In Connecticut, holiday hours are not considered "working hours," and so should not be counted as part of the 40-hour regular work week.

For example, suppose an hourly, non-exempt employee receives eight hours of holiday pay for July 4. The employee works 32 hours over the course of the other four weekdays. The employer also asks them to work six hours on Saturday.

It's a space on the high seas where laws and conventions can be sidestepped by risk-taking entrepreneurs and the wealthy tourists who help fund their dreams. At least for now.

"Aviation was in its infancy — and it took accidents for decisions to be made to be put into laws," Mercogliano said. "There'll be a time when you won't think twice about getting on a submersible and going down 13,000 feet. But we're not there yet."

Windfall taxes get a breezy airing Down Under | Reuters

For starters, the changes only come into effect when the price of coal is really high. For anything over $175 a tonne, 20% is taken off the top, rising to 30% above $225 a tonne and 40% if it costs more than $300 a tonne.

It's a good model for others to follow, be that New South Wales, the Australian federal government or administrations abroad. And the beauty is that it kicks in when companies ought already to be raking in the cash. It's a fair trade worth emulating.
